Galatians 2:16

NT Letters
Galatians 2:16
16know that a man is not justified by works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

JW Usage

JWs acknowledge that Mosaic Law cannot save but argue that "the law of the Christ" — a new set of requirements including preaching, meeting attendance, and organisational loyalty — replaces it. The verse's force against works-based justification is blunted by redefining which works are in view, limiting Paul's critique to the Mosaic code rather than to law-keeping as a principle.

Protestant Usage

Paul repeats the justification-by-faith formula three times in a single verse — an emphatic triple denial of works-based salvation: "a man is not declared righteous by works of law but only through faith in Christ Jesus… not by works of law, because by works of law no flesh will be declared righteous." The repetition is deliberate and excludes any works-based supplement. warns that even an angel from heaven preaching a different gospel is accursed — and three movements have arrived claiming angelic authority (Islam, Mormonism, JWs). The JW application is uniquely sharp because their Christology identifies Jesus as Michael the Archangel, making their Jesus literally "an angel from heaven" preaching a works-supplemented gospel that Paul condemns here.
