We preach the good news of the Kingdom, just as Jesus commanded. Jesus is
Michael the Archangel — the chief angel — through whom Jehovah's purposes
are carried out.
Paul warns in about "another sort of good news" and specifies that even "an angel out of heaven" delivering a different gospel is accursed. Three major movements in history claim angelic authority for their message:
- Islam — the angel Jibril (Gabriel) allegedly dictated the Quran to
Mohammed - Mormonism — the angel Moroni allegedly delivered the golden plates to
Joseph Smith - Jehovah's Witnesses — the Watchtower teaches Jesus IS Michael the
Archangel, meaning the gospel comes through a created angel
The JW application is uniquely sharp. Islam and Mormonism claim angelic endorsement for their message. But the Watchtower goes further: they teach that Jesus himself IS the angel. They have collapsed the Saviour into the very category Paul warns about.
Consider the chain: (1) Paul says even if an angel from heaven preaches another gospel — anathema. (2) The Watchtower teaches Jesus is Michael the Archangel — an angel from heaven. (3) The Watchtower's Jesus preaches a gospel of creature-Christology, works-based salvation, two-tier membership, and organisational mediation. (4) This is, by Paul's definition, "another sort of good news."
The passage uses the NWT's own rendering and requires no Greek knowledge. Read it together directly from their Bible.
Paul specifically warned about an angel from heaven preaching a different gospel — and three separate movements arrived, each claiming angelic authority for a message that contradicts the apostolic gospel. The JW version is uniquely devastating because their Christology (Jesus = Michael) means their Jesus is literally "an angel from heaven."
Michael is not delivering a different gospel — he IS Jesus.
That is precisely the problem. You've identified Jesus as an angel. And the gospel your organisation preaches through this angel-Jesus is different from what Paul preached. Paul preached justification by grace through faith, apart from works of law (, ). The Watchtower teaches salvation requires obedience to laws and ordinances administered by an organisation. Paul said his gospel came by revelation of Jesus Christ (). The Watchtower's gospel comes through the Governing Body's interpretation of an angel-Jesus.
We don't follow an angel — we follow the Bible.
I'm glad you say that. Let's test one teaching right now. Can you show me a verse — from any Bible — that says Jesus is Michael the Archangel? Not an inference chain, but a verse that identifies them as the same person.
Paul was talking about a completely different gospel — ours is the same one he preached.
Paul preached that Christ is the eternal image of the invisible God (), that all things were created through him and for him, and that he holds all things together. He preached justification by faith apart from works of law (). Does the Watchtower teach Jesus is eternal? Does it teach salvation apart from organisational works? If not, it's a different gospel — regardless of how similar the vocabulary sounds.
Islam and Mormonism are false religions — you can't compare us to them.
I'm not saying your intentions are the same. I'm pointing out that Paul anticipated the exact mechanism — angelic authority for a different message — and three groups independently fulfilled that pattern. The question is whether Paul's warning applies. He said "even if" — meaning it doesn't matter how sincere the messenger is. What matters is whether the message matches the apostolic gospel.
Don't deliver this as a gotcha. The "angel from heaven" connection is powerful, but wielded as a weapon it will trigger shutdown. Frame it as discovery — "I noticed something" — and read the passage together. Let the text do the work.
Read Galatians chapters 1-2 in a standard English translation this week. Pay attention to what Paul says about the source and content of his gospel.
