JW Usage

JWs teach that death is total unconsciousness — soul sleep — and that the dead will not be conscious again until the resurrection. Second Corinthians 5:8 is explained as Paul looking forward to the resurrection, not to an immediate conscious state after death. The "absence from the body" is treated as the moment of resurrection, not as an intermediate state of consciousness between death and future bodily transformation.

Protestant Usage

Paul presents only two states: "in the body" or "with the Lord" (). There is no third state of unconsciousness between them. confirms: Paul desires "the releasing and the being with Christ, for this is far better." If centuries of unconsciousness intervene between death and being with Christ, dying is not "far better" — it is nothing at all. Paul would not prefer nothing over fruitful ministry. He describes three options: remain alive, depart and be with Christ, or eventually receive a resurrection body. If option two merely means unconsciousness until resurrection, it collapses into option three and is not a real choice. Jesus himself promised the thief on the cross: "today you will be with me in Paradise" (). shows souls consciously crying out under the altar. The consistent NT testimony is that death for the believer means immediate conscious presence with Christ.
