The Exact Representation Problem
Jesus is a created being — the firstborn of creation, Michael the
Archangel. He is the greatest of God's creatures and reflects God's glory
more than anyone else, but he is not Jehovah himself. He is 'a god' — a
mighty one — but not the Almighty.
Build a simple syllogism using only the JW's own NWT: (1) Read — 'Who in the skies can compare to Jehovah? Who among the sons of God is like Jehovah?' Answer: nobody. (2) Read — 'There is none like you among the gods, O Jehovah... you are God, you alone.' (3) Read — Jesus is 'the exact representation of [God's] very being.' (4) Ask: How can Jesus be the exact representation of someone that no creature can resemble? Either Jesus isn't a creature, or the Bible contradicts itself.
This argument uses only the NWT and requires no Greek. The JW's own Bible creates an impossible contradiction if Jesus is a creature. Let them sit with the tension.
Jesus is more like Jehovah than the angels — he's the closest to God.
But the Psalm doesn't say 'no one comes close.' It says 'who is LIKE Jehovah?' The answer is 'nobody.' Not 'nobody except Jesus.' There's no exception clause. And doesn't say Jesus is 'similar' to God — it says he's the EXACT representation of his very being. 'Close' and 'exact' are very different things.
God can exalt a creature to reflect his glory — like a mirror reflects light.
A mirror doesn't have the same nature as the light source. But says Jesus is the exact representation of God's BEING — his hypostasis, his very substance. That's not a reflection; that's an identity of nature. And still says 'you ALONE are God.' If Jesus has the exact being of God but isn't God, then God isn't alone in being God — and Psalm 86 is wrong.
Hebrews 1:3 just means Jesus perfectly represents God's will and character.
The NWT itself doesn't say 'character' or 'will' — it says 'his very being.' The Greek word is hypostasis — substance, essence, actual being. And charakter means an exact imprint, like a signet ring pressed into wax. The wax bears the exact nature of the seal. If Jesus bears the exact nature of God's being, and no creature can even resemble Jehovah, then Jesus isn't a creature.
Don't rush past the contradiction. Let the JW wrestle with it. The power of this argument is in the silence after you ask the question. Don't fill it with more arguments.
Read and until you can quote from memory the two questions "Who in the skies can compare to Jehovah? Who among the sons of God is like Jehovah?" and the answer "you are God, you alone." Then read and look up verse 3 in the NWT yourself to confirm "the exact representation of his very being." Practise the four-step syllogism aloud until it takes under a minute, and practise stopping after the question. Prepare for the reply that Jesus is simply the closest to Jehovah, and rehearse the difference between "close" and "exact."
