Revelation 5:8

NT Prophecy
Revelation 5:8
8When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

JW Usage

Watchtower commentary reads as describing the honour given to the Lamb at his enthronement — the four living creatures and 24 elders prostrate themselves before Jesus as Jehovah's appointed king. The "falling down" is treated as obeisance rather than worship, appropriate to the Lamb's exalted-but-not-divine status. The incense and prayers represent the worship of God's people ascending to him through Jesus.

Protestant Usage

Notice the action. The same beings who in 4:10 "fall down before the One seated on the throne" now fall down before the Lamb — same posture, same heavenly setting, same worshippers. Then in v14 those same beings will "fall down and worship" the Lamb (the NWT itself uses "worshipped" there). The progression is unmistakable: 4:10 worship of the Father; 5:8 prostration before the Lamb; 5:14 explicit worship of God and the Lamb jointly. Either every heavenly creature commits idolatry without correction in God's own throne room, or the Lamb shares the Father's worship-receiving identity.

NWT Issue

The NWT renders the predicative "are" (eisin) as "mean" in the parenthetical "(the incense means the prayers of the holy ones)." Consensus reads "are the prayers" (ESV/NASB/NIV/KJV). Same is-to-means pattern documented at Rev 5:6, 17:9, 17:18, 20:14. The shift weakens identification language toward mere symbolic equivalence — a recurring stylistic preference that softens the text's force whenever apocalyptic symbols are equated with their referents.
