Matthew 7:20
Matthew 7:2020So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.
The Watchtower regularly invokes alongside verse 16 to commend its own moral record: no participation in wars, strong families, low divorce rates, and no paid clergy-laity divide. The brochure and doorstep presentations scope the fruit test to these three favourable domains and conclude that the organisation is the "true religion" because its fruit is visibly good in the categories it chooses to measure. The verse also appears in the retention-rate discussion, where Witnesses argue that their community health vindicates the organisation's claim to divine blessing.
Reformed exegesis notes that verse 16 and verse 20 bookend the passage with the identical phrase — "by their fruits you will recognise them" — forming an inclusio that frames the entire paragraph as a single whole-harvest test. Jesus does not say "pick three favourable branches and measure those"; he says "every good tree bears good fruit." The test applies to everything the tree produces, including items not printed in the brochure — the Australian Royal Commission's documented 1,006 perpetrators with zero reports to civil authorities, the 1975 Armageddon prediction, the Malawi-Mexico double standard, and the Pew Research finding that only 34 percent of those raised as Witnesses remain in the faith as adults. The fruit test is a whole-orchard test, honestly applied to both traditions, not a self-selecting showcase.
