Used to establish that angels existed before the physical creation and witnessed it — which in Watchtower teaching includes the pre-human Jesus, present as the master worker. The phrase "sons of God" applied to angels is also cited to show that being called God's son does not imply deity, since angels bear the title too.

Protestant Usage

The "sons of God" point is fair as far as it goes, and worth granting. The Hebrew Scriptures do call angels sons of God. So the title alone does not settle anything. Which is why the New Testament does not rest the case on the title. Hebrews 1 spends an entire chapter distinguishing the Son from the angels precisely because the words overlap. Verse 5 asks to which of the angels God ever said "you are my son" in the way he says it to Christ. Verse 6 has God commanding the angels to worship him. Verse 8 addresses the Son as God. Verses 10 to 12 make him the Creator who remains while creation perishes. Verse 13 asks which angel was ever invited to sit at God's right hand, and verse 14 answers that angels are ministering spirits, sent out. So the argument is not "he is called Son, therefore he is God." It is that Scripture assigns to this Son a set of things it never assigns to any angel — including the ones here who shouted at creation rather than performing it. Compare , , .
