Galatians 3:1
Galatians 3:11O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.
JWs read Paul's rebuke to the Galatians as correcting a reversion to the Mosaic Law specifically — not as a universal warning against adding works to the gospel. The Watchtower teaches that spiritual progression happens through organisational requirements (study, meetings, field service, loyalty to the Governing Body), and the Spirit's indwelling is restricted to the 144,000 anointed class. The "other sheep" are never offered the Spirit as a starting point.
Paul's horror in is that believers who began with the Spirit are retreating to law-based performance: "Having begun by spirit, are you now being made perfect by flesh?" The Galatians made the mistake of going from Spirit to works. The JW system for the "other sheep" is worse: they are never offered the Spirit in the first place — they start with works and stay there indefinitely. , just two chapters later, draws the line: those seeking justification by law "have fallen away from his undeserved kindness." Whatever "faith working through love" (5:6) means, it cannot mean law-keeping is part of justification — Paul has just said the opposite. Love in Galatians 5 is the fruit of faith, not the fuel; justification produces love, not the reverse.
