NT Letters
2 Timothy 2:24
24And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing.

JW Usage

The NWT renders as "a slave of the Lord does not need to fight, but needs to be gentle toward all, qualified to teach, exercising self-control under evil." Witnesses cite it as the charter for their doorstep manner — trained to be patient, non-confrontational, and polite even when the householder is hostile. The verse is part of how JWs understand the "ministry" and why they present as quiet and persistent rather than argument- hungry.

Protestant Usage

The verse applies equally — and perhaps more urgently — to the Christian who opens the door when the JW knocks. The Witness has been trained in gentleness; the Christian at the door too often has not. Paul's rule is bilateral: "gentle toward all" means the householder as well as the Witness.
The practical point is simple. Meet a JW at your door not to win an argument but to be seen as a kind, curious, Bible-respecting neighbour. A single well-placed question asked with warmth — "What drew you to your faith?" or "If you found something in the Bible that contradicted a Watchtower teaching, what would you do?" — plants a seed that a thirty-minute rebuttal never will. The JW has rarely met a Christian who is genuinely warm and scripturally serious. Being that person, consistently, is the apologetic actually authorises.
