2 Corinthians 4:2

NT Letters
2 Corinthians 4:2
2Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful ways. We do not practice deceit, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by open proclamation of the truth, we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

JW Usage

JWs are familiar with — Paul "renounced the shameful, underhanded things" — but do not apply it to the organisation's own practices. The confidential "Shepherd the Flock of God" manual contains all the rules for judicial committees and disfellowshipping, yet ordinary members are forbidden to read it. The Watchtower's 1997 statement that "true religion in no way practises secretiveness" is not applied reflexively.

Protestant Usage

Paul declares: "we have renounced the shameful, underhanded things, not walking with cunning or adulterating the word of God, but by making the truth manifest" (, NWT). Jesus said "I said nothing in secret" (). Yet Jehovah's Witnesses are governed by a confidential manual they are forbidden to read — and can be disfellowshipped and shunned based on its procedures. The Watchtower's gradual-disclosure strategy compounds the problem: a new Bible student may study for months before learning the full scope of JW commitments (shunning, blood policy, Armageddon destruction of non-JWs). By that point, social bonds are formed and the cost of leaving has risen. The very verse JWs cite for door-to-door ministry — — says Paul "did not hold back from declaring everything that was profitable." Paul's model is full disclosure; the Watchtower's is staged revelation.
