1 Peter 2:9
1 Peter 2:99But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
JWs restrict the "royal priesthood" of to the 144,000 anointed Christians who will rule with Christ in heaven. The "great crowd" are faithful worshippers with an earthly hope but are not part of the new covenant priesthood. Direct priestly access to God is a privilege reserved for the heavenly class; other Witnesses approach God through the organisation and the anointed mediators.
Peter writes to "the temporary residents scattered about in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia" () — ordinary believers across five Roman provinces — and calls all of them "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation" (2:9). Peter deliberately echoes , where the entire nation of Israel was called "a kingdom of priests." The OT applied the title to the whole people; Peter applies it to the whole church. confirms: people "out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation" have been made "a kingdom and priests to our God." If every Christian is already a priest with direct access to God, the Watchtower's restriction of priestly access to 144,000 anointed ones contradicts the explicit scope of the New Testament's priesthood language.
