Responding to Jehovah's Witnesses

The Romans 7→8 Trap
Locked out of the only chapter that offers freedom
Sanctification Strong Tone-safe
Doorstep Question
"Romans 7 ends with Paul crying out 'Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?' answers: 'The law of the Spirit of life has set you free.' The solution is the indwelling Spirit. Does the Spirit dwell in you — or does your organisation teach that the Spirit is only for the 144,000? "
JW Claim

Jehovah's Witnesses teach that the Holy Spirit indwells only the 144,000 anointed Christians. The "other sheep" — the vast majority of active JWs — do not have the Spirit dwelling in them. The other sheep relate to Jehovah through the organisation and through Christ as mediator only of the anointed.

Strategy

Romans 7 is Paul's diagnosis of law-based striving without the Spirit: ongoing defeat, internal conflict, inability to do the good he wants to do. Romans 8 is the solution — the indwelling Spirit who "gives life to your mortal bodies" and "intercedes for us."
The JW "other sheep" are doctrinally locked in Romans 7. By their own theology, they cannot access Romans 8's solution because the Spirit doesn't indwell them.

  1. Read together: "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?"
  2. Ask: "Does this sound familiar? The struggle Paul describes — wanting to do good but unable to, doing what he hates — have you experienced that?"
  3. Many sincere JWs will quietly say yes. Let them.
  4. Read : "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death."
  5. Ask: "The solution Paul gives is the indwelling Spirit. Does your organisation teach that the Spirit lives inside you personally?"
If they say no (most honest JWs will), you've created the opening: "So Paul's answer to the struggle you just described is unavailable to you — by your own organisation's teaching. Does that concern you?"
Key Insight

The JW system creates a theological trap: it produces exactly the conditions Romans 7 describes (law-based striving, ongoing defeat) while blocking access to Romans 8's only solution (the indwelling Spirit). Most JWs live Romans 7 without knowing Romans 8 is available to them.

Likely JW Response 1

The Spirit works in all of us — just not in the same way as the anointed.

Your Counter

But draws a sharp line: "If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ." Paul gives no third category — partial Spirit, associate Spirit, organisational Spirit. Either the Spirit dwells in you or you don't belong to Christ. Which does your organisation say is true for the other sheep?

Likely JW Response 2

Romans 7 describes Paul before his conversion — not the ongoing Christian life.

Your Counter

Scholars debate that, but either way, Romans 8's solution applies to all Christians. "Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God" (). The question isn't whether Romans 7 is pre- or post-conversion — the question is: does the Spirit dwell in you now? Does apply to you: "the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you"?

Likely JW Response 3

We receive guidance from the organisation, which is directed by the Spirit.

Your Counter

Romans 8 is intensely personal and individual. "You received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry 'Abba! Father!'" (). "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children" (). This is a direct, personal testimony — not mediated through an organisation. Paul's "our" and "we" includes all the Roman Christians he's writing to, not a special anointed subset.

What to Avoid

Don't use this argument if the JW hasn't already shown some openness or vulnerability about the struggle against sin. The pastoral power of this argument is that it names something they feel. If they seem defensive, try Romans 6:14 first.

Homework to Assign

Read the second half of Romans 7 and the first half of Romans 8 in one sitting, until you can move from the cry of to the answer of from memory, then note , 8:11 and 8:15–16. Check the NWT wording of and 8:2 so you can read them together from their Bible. Practise the two questions aloud, 'Does this sound familiar?' and 'Does your organisation teach that the Spirit lives inside you personally?', and practise waiting quietly after the first. Use this only when someone has shown openness about the struggle with sin; otherwise reach for . Expect 'the Spirit works in all of us, just differently'; rehearse , which allows no third category.
