Salvation is a process that depends on continued obedience, field service,
and organisational loyalty. No one can say they 'have been saved' until
Jehovah makes his final judgement.
Open the NWT to . It reads: 'By this undeserved kindness, indeed, you HAVE BEEN saved through faith; and this not owing to you, it is God's gift. No, it is not owing to works.' Point out three things in their own translation: (1) 'Have been saved' — the Greek sesōsmenoi is a perfect passive participle, meaning a completed action with ongoing results. You have already been saved. (2) 'Not owing to you' — it is not something you produced. (3) 'Not owing to works' — field service hours, meeting attendance, and organisational loyalty are works. Then read verse 10: 'created in union with Christ Jesus FOR good works.' Works are the result of salvation, not the cause. confirms: 'He saved us, not by righteous deeds we had done, but according to his mercy.'
Even the NWT says 'you have been saved' — past tense, completed action. If the Bible says you've been saved and the organisation says you haven't, the organisation is contradicting Scripture.
James 2:26 says faith without works is dead — so works are required.
James is answering a different question: 'What does genuine faith look like?' Not 'How do you get saved?' answers both: 'We are created in Christ Jesus FOR good works.' Works are the fruit of salvation, not the root. A tree produces fruit because it is alive — the fruit doesn't make it alive. James' point is that if there are no works at all, the faith was never real. But that's different from saying works earn salvation.
'Undeserved kindness' still requires our response — we must exercise faith.
Absolutely — faith is the instrument, not the cause. But even the NWT says 'this not owing to you, it is God's gift.' The faith itself is a gift. And 'not owing to works' is absolute — it does not say 'not owing to some works' or 'not owing to works alone.' Paul is drawing a hard line: grace or works, not both. in your NWT makes it explicit: 'if it is by undeserved kindness, it is no longer owing to works; otherwise, the undeserved kindness no longer proves to be undeserved kindness.'
We must keep proving ourselves worthy — Philippians 2:12 says 'work out your salvation.'
Read the next verse: 'for it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure' (). You work OUT what God has already worked IN. You don't work FOR salvation — you work FROM salvation. The power to obey comes from God, not from you. That's the opposite of a performance-based system.
Don't dismiss their sincerity or hard work. Many JWs are exhausted from trying to earn what the Bible says is a gift. Approach with compassion: 'What if all that effort was a response to love, not a requirement for acceptance?'
Read as one unit until you can walk from "dead in trespasses" through "But God, rich in mercy" to "created for good works" without looking. Open the NWT at verses 8-9 and confirm for yourself that it says "you have been saved" and "not owing to works." Practise the doorstep question aloud, pausing on the past tense. Then prepare for the swing to : rehearse the fruit-and-root answer from , and keep in the NWT and ready for "work out your salvation."
