The Earth Will Be Full of the Knowledge of the Lord
Isaiah 11:9 and Habakkuk 2:14 describe conditions in the future paradise when
all mankind will have accurate knowledge of Jehovah. This cannot apply to the
present because most people do not know Jehovah, and Christendom teaches false
doctrine. Only after Armageddon, under Kingdom rule, will these prophecies be
fulfilled.
This argument takes the JW's own proof-text and shows that it is being fulfilled progressively through the great commission.
- Read together in the NWT: "the earth will certainly be filled with the knowledge of Jehovah as the waters cover the sea." Then read in the NWT: "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Jehovah as the waters cover the sea." Both use the same imagery — progressive filling, like water rising.
- Note the imagery: waters covering the sea is a PROCESS, not a sudden event. The tide comes in gradually. The promise is that divine knowledge will spread until it covers everything — not that it will appear instantaneously.
- Connect to the great commission: Jesus said "Go and make disciples of people of all the nations" ( NWT). Paul wrote that the good news "is bearing fruit and increasing in all the world" ( NWT). By , Paul could say the gospel had been "preached in all creation under heaven." The apostles understood the spread of gospel knowledge as the fulfilment of exactly these prophetic promises.
- Trace the trajectory: in AD 33 there were perhaps 120 believers (). By AD 60, Paul could make his claim. Today, roughly one-third of the world's population identifies as Christian. The Bible has been translated into over 700 languages. The waters ARE covering the sea.
- Acknowledge what remains: the knowledge is not yet complete or universal. But the trajectory matches the prophecy — gradual, progressive filling. The Watchtower's model requires that the prophecy has zero fulfilment until after Armageddon, which contradicts both the imagery and the historical reality.
and use water imagery — gradual, progressive filling. The gospel has spread from twelve disciples to billions across every continent. The earth IS being filled with the knowledge of Jehovah, exactly as prophesied.
Most people don't truly know Jehovah. Christendom teaches falsehood.
The prophecy says the earth will be FULL of the knowledge of Jehovah "as the waters cover the sea." It does not say every individual will have perfect knowledge. Waters covering the sea still have shallow spots. The point is direction and trajectory. Two thousand years ago, the nations worshipped idols. Today, billions confess the God of Abraham. The trajectory is unmistakable.
Only Jehovah's Witnesses have accurate knowledge. There are only eight million of us.
If accurate knowledge of Jehovah is limited to 8 million people out of 8 billion, then after 2,000 years the waters have covered 0.1 per cent of the sea. That would mean the prophecy is failing, not succeeding. But if the knowledge of Jehovah includes every Christian who confesses Jesus as Lord — over 2 billion people — then the waters are rising exactly as Isaiah and Habakkuk promised.
Do not claim that everyone on earth already knows God or that the fulfilment is complete. The "already/not yet" framework is essential. Also avoid arguing about which Christians have "accurate" knowledge — stay with the broad sweep of the prophecy's progressive fulfilment.
Read Isaiah 11 and Habakkuk 2 so you see verse 9 and verse 14 in their own settings, then verify both NWT renderings on jw.org and read how jw.org applies to the future paradise. Next, read and 1:23 in their context until you can explain from memory that Paul already saw the good news "bearing fruit and increasing in all the world". Keep in mind — about 120 believers at the start. Practise the doorstep question aloud, pausing on "right now". Prepare for "Only Jehovah's Witnesses have accurate knowledge": gently ask what that would mean for the waters after two thousand years, without sliding into a contest over which Christians are accurate. Hold the already/not yet balance throughout.
