2024 'Removed' Rebrand — Not Reform
In March 2024 the Governing Body announced a loving refinement: members
may now offer a brief greeting to a removed person, and Bible-trained
conscience guides the warmth of that greeting. The August 2024 Watchtower
retired the word "disfellowshipping" in favour of "removal", and the 2024
Annual Meeting (5 October) reaffirmed the new direction with the line, "We
welcome back thousands who have been removed". This reflects Jehovah's
progressive light and his desire to balance discipline with mercy. The
underlying scriptural arrangement (1 Corinthians 5:11-13; 2 John 10) remains
in force and is still binding on all baptised members.
- Begin with the announcements themselves — these are THEIR own words from THEIR own broadcasts. In the March 2024 Governing Body Update #2, Mark Sanderson said members may now offer a brief greeting to a removed person who attends a meeting, with the warmth left to "Bible-trained conscience". The August 2024 Watchtower study article ("Help for Those Who Are Removed From the Congregation") then retired the term "disfellowshipping" in favour of "removal". The 2024 Annual Meeting on 5 October framed the change as loving and welcomed back "thousands who have been removed". Note carefully what is changed (terminology, a brief greeting at a neutral, non-Kingdom-Hall location) and what is not. Family contact rules remain unchanged. Judicial committees still convene. Reproof and reinstatement still hinge on elders' assessment. The Shepherd the Flock of God manual still governs the procedure. What was renamed; what was not reformed.
- Place the rebrand against the 1947/1952 history. In Awake! January 8, 1947 (p. 27) the organisation called excommunication "altogether foreign to Bible teachings" and traced it to pagan sources. Five years later, in the March 1, 1952 Watchtower, the same organisation formalised disfellowshipping using the very same scriptures it had condemned. From 1952 to 2024 the policy was defended as scriptural, loving and unchangeable. Then in 2024 a new label appears, but the substance is preserved. This is the third position on the same practice: pagan and unbiblical (1947), divinely mandated and harsh (1952-2024), divinely mandated but softer-sounding (2024-). The scriptures did not change in any of those three eras. Only the policy did.
- Apply the diagnostic of — "having a form of godliness but denying its power". Paul warns of religious systems that retain the shape of holiness while inverting its substance. The 2024 announcement preserves the appearance of mercy (a brief greeting!) while keeping the mechanism of social control (no warm contact, no return to the household, no reconciliation without elder approval). Read the 2024 update carefully: the brief greeting is permitted only at a neutral, non-Kingdom-Hall location. A removed parent of a baptised child still cannot share a family meal at home, attend the wedding as honoured family, or sit at the kitchen table. The brief-greeting concession is cosmetic — eye contact in a parking lot while the family relationship remains banned.
- Press the immutability question with and — "I, the LORD, do not change" and "with whom there is no change or shifting shadow". If shunning was Jehovah's loving arrangement in 1952, why did it require a 2024 update? If a brief greeting at a neutral location is a permissible expression of love now, why was it forbidden for seventy-two years? Either Jehovah's mind changed (impossible) or the organisation's mind changed (and the previous seventy-two years of enforcement were on men's authority, not God's).
- Close with — Jesus' rebuke of the Pharisees who cleansed the outside of the cup while leaving the inside full. The 2024 rebrand is the outside of the cup. The inside — judicial committees, family separation, public announcements at the Kingdom Hall, fear of losing one's children — is unchanged. And underneath the rebrand sits the unity of the Spirit () which the policy still tears apart, dividing families along organisational lines that no scripture authorises.
A name change is not a policy change. The March 2024 brief-greeting concession, the August 2024 Watchtower terminology change, and the October 2024 Annual Meeting reframing preserve every coercive element of the disfellowshipping system — judicial committees, family separation, fear of losing children, elder gatekeeping of restoration — while softening the vocabulary. Renaming "disfellowshipping" to "removal" and permitting a brief greeting at a neutral, non-Kingdom-Hall location is the form of godliness without its power (). An organisation whose policies on family separation require revision every generation is not channelling the unchanging God of ; it is channelling its own institutional pressure.
This is just refinement — Jehovah's light gets brighter (Proverbs 4:18).
describes the path of the righteous getting brighter, not policies on family separation cycling between three positions in seventy-seven years. New light should add to old light, not reverse it (Russell, Zion's Watch Tower, February 1881). The 1947 article condemned excommunication as pagan; the 1952 articles mandated it; the 2024 announcements soften the language while preserving the mechanism. That is not a brightening path — that is course correction under external pressure (court rulings in Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands; the Australian Royal Commission; ARC and Pew retention data; Wall v. Judicial Committee). Brightening light does not require a public-relations rewrite.
Removed ones can now be briefly greeted at neutral locations — that's a meaningful change.
Read the announcement carefully. The greeting is permitted at a neutral, non-Kingdom-Hall location, not at the family home, and it does not extend to family meals, celebrations, weddings, or restored relationship. Judicial committees still convene. Family rules are unchanged. A token concession in the grocery aisle is not the restorative model of , where Paul commands the congregation to "forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow" and to "reaffirm your love for him". Paul wants the wound healed; the 2024 update permits eye contact in a parking lot.
This shows the organisation is responsive and humble — willing to refine.
An organisation truly responsive and humble would acknowledge the seventy-two years of separated families on its watch and grieve them publicly. The 2024 update offers no apology, no acknowledgement of harm, no recognition that the previous policy went beyond scripture. Compare with — "confess your sins to each other". A humble institution names its errors; it does not rebrand them. Compare also with Geoffrey Jackson's August 2015 Australian Royal Commission testimony, where he called it "presumptuous" to cast the Governing Body as God's spokespeople — yet Watchtower publications routinely make exactly that claim. Same institutional pattern: soften the public face, leave the internal teaching intact.
Many religions practise some form of church discipline — this is biblical.
Yes, scripture commands church discipline (1 Corinthians 5; ; ) — but it commands restorative discipline. Paul follows up his command in 1 Corinthians 5 with 2 Corinthians 2: restore him, comfort him, reaffirm your love. says "restore him with a spirit of gentleness". says treat the unrepentant as a tax collector — and Jesus ate with tax collectors (). The biblical pattern is pursuit and restoration. The Watchtower pattern, before and after the 2024 rebrand, is institutional separation enforced by fear of losing one's own standing. Renaming the practice does not align it with Jesus' shepherd model of leaving the ninety-nine to seek the one ().
Do not present this as proof the organisation is finally collapsing or about to fall — that is triumphalism and they will hear it as gloating. Do not call the rebrand "PR" with contempt; the words may be accurate but the tone matters. Many Witnesses will have welcomed the 2024 updates as evidence of love and refinement; treat that hope gently. Lead with their own broadcasts and the 1947-1952-2024 sequence — let the pattern speak. Do not press them to renounce the organisation; press them to ask whether the scriptures changed or the policy did. If they are grieving a removed family member, stop arguing and listen.
Watch the March 2024 Governing Body Update #2 (Mark Sanderson) and read the August 2024 Watchtower study article "Help for Those Who Are Removed From the Congregation" yourself. Note what is changed (terminology, brief greeting at a neutral location) and what is not (judicial committees, family rules, reinstatement procedure, Shepherd the Flock of God procedural manual). Then read Awake! January 8, 1947 p. 27 and Watchtower March 1, 1952. Three positions on one practice in seventy-seven years. Then read and . What does Paul prescribe after discipline?
