# Romans 8:14

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses restrict the scope of Romans 8:14 to the 144,000 anointed class. Only these are "sons of God" led by the Spirit; the "other sheep" — the vast majority of active JWs — are not adopted as sons but are at best "friends of God" like Abraham. Because the Watchtower teaches that the Spirit indwells only the anointed, the other sheep cannot be "led by the Spirit" in the personal, indwelling sense Paul describes. Romans 8:14 is therefore cordoned off as a promise for a small elite, leaving most JWs without access to the sonship Paul offers.

## Protestant Usage

The Protestant reading observes that Paul addresses his letter "to all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people" (Romans 1:7), never limiting the Spirit's indwelling to a special subset. Romans 8:9 draws a sharp line: "If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ." There is no third category — partial Spirit, associate Spirit, or organisational Spirit. Either the Spirit dwells in a person or that person does not belong to Christ. The JW two-class system creates an impossible situation: the vast majority of JWs, by their own theology, do not have the Spirit dwelling in them, yet the Bible says those without the Spirit cannot please God (Romans 8:8). Paul's "all who are led by the Spirit" encompasses every genuine believer. The scholars' debate about whether Romans 7 is pre- or post-conversion is secondary; the decisive question is whether the Spirit dwells in the believer now, making Romans 8's promises — sonship, freedom, intercession — personally available.
