# Romans 2:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you to repentance?

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, because you do not know that God in his kindness is trying to lead you to repentance?"

## JW Usage

Read as a warning against presuming on Jehovah's patience — his forbearance is an opportunity to repent, not permission to delay. The Watchtower applies it to the urgency of responding before Armageddon, and to individuals who are putting off dedication.

## Protestant Usage

The mechanism named here is the point: God's kindness is what leads a person to repentance. Not his severity, not the pressure of a deadline — his kindness. That is worth holding up against any approach that tries to produce change through fear or withdrawal. If kindness is God's chosen instrument for bringing people to repentance, then a practice that removes kindness in order to compel repentance is working against the grain of this verse. It also has a gentler personal use. Many Witnesses are exhausted — hours, meetings, the sense that approval is always provisional. Romans 2:4 says the thing that turns a heart is not achievement or pressure but being treated kindly by God. That is a different message from the one they are carrying, and it can be offered without any argument attached. Pair it with Ezekiel 36:26-27, where God himself replaces the heart of stone, and with the father in Luke 15 who runs. Compare Mark 2:17, Luke 15:5, Ezekiel 36:26.
