# Matthew 7:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

## JW Usage

Matthew 7:16 is the Watchtower's signature self-commendation text. The verse — "by their fruits you will recognise them" — is invoked across decades of doorstep brochures and Awake! articles to argue that Jehovah's Witnesses are manifestly the "true religion" because their fruit is good in three carefully chosen domains: refusal of military service ("no wars"), multi-generational family stability ("low divorce rate"), and the absence of a paid clergy. The argument is then closed by invoking John 13:35 — worldwide unity as proof of love. The scoping is the move that does all the work: only three branches of the orchard are inspected, and the rest of the harvest — the 1006 perpetrators documented by the 2015-2016 Australian Royal Commission with zero referrals to civil authorities, the 1925 and 1975 failed predictions, the Malawi/Mexico political- card double standard, the 66%-attrition rate (Pew) among those raised in the faith, the secret elder manual — is excluded from view.

## Protestant Usage

The protestant counter is not to deny the fruit test but to insist on it honestly. Matthew 7:16 and 7:20 form a grammatical inclusio — the same phrase brackets verses 16-20, marking the whole paragraph as the test. Inside the inclusio Jesus says "every good tree bears good fruit" (verse 17) — every, not some, and certainly not three carefully chosen branches. The rhetorical move is therefore not to attack the Watchtower's good fruits (which are real and worth honouring) but to widen the lens to the whole harvest. Matthew 7:16 then becomes the shared standard under which both traditions submit: walk both orchards, count the whole harvest, apply the same test honestly. The 2015 Australian Royal Commission's findings are the single most decisive item in the wider harvest, because the source data is the Watchtower's own internal records (blue cards, branch correspondence) subpoenaed under oath — not "apostate propaganda" that can be dismissed. Verse 21 then closes the test: not everyone who says "Lord, Lord" enters the kingdom — the test is real and the stakes are real for both traditions. Used as the central exhibit in argument 135 (fruit-test-whole-harvest), with the inclusio analysis as the decisive grammatical point, and as a supporting text in arguments 130 (bonhoeffer-confessing-church), 131 (civil-rights-movement-prohibited), 136 (glass-levchak-divorce- study-response), and 138 (jw-divorce-statistical-artifact).
