# Matthew 5:9

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

## JW Usage

JWs cite their refusal to participate in military service as evidence of peacemaking and proof of divine backing. The organisation's political neutrality — no voting, no jury service, no flag salute — is presented as the fruit of Jehovah's holy spirit. The "no wars" record is a cornerstone of the Watchtower's self-identification as the true religion, frequently displayed alongside disaster relief as evidence of organisational fruit.

## Protestant Usage

The same "cosmic neutrality" doctrine that keeps Witnesses out of war also kept them off the bridge at Selma with Martin Luther King, out of the voting booth for the Voting Rights Act, off juries that convicted Klansmen, and away from petition drives for civil rights. A faithful Witness in 1965 Alabama could preach but could not march, vote, serve on a jury, or sign a petition. Jesus' call to be "peacemakers" (Matthew 5:9) implies active engagement — making peace, not merely abstaining from conflict. The historic peace churches (Mennonites, Quakers, Church of the Brethren) maintained pacifist conviction for centuries longer than the Watchtower, while simultaneously leading the abolition movement, founding community hospitals, and running the Civilian Public Service programme during World War II. Their pacifism was voluntary and outward-facing — they refused to fight but insisted on serving. The Watchtower's neutrality is comprehensive withdrawal: no fighting, but also no civic service of any kind.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [What Cosmic Neutrality Forbade at Selma](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/civil-rights-movement-prohibited.md) — Whatever you did for the least of these my brothers, you did for me (Matt 25:40) [Practice]
- [The Civic Cost of Cosmic Neutrality](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/cosmic-neutrality-civic-cost.md) — Jesus said 'my kingdom is not of this world' — not 'my followers must abandon the world' (John 18:36) [Practice]
- [The Historic Peace Churches — Voluntary Pacifism Without Shunning](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/historic-peace-churches-voluntary.md) — Blessed are the peacemakers — the ones who choose, not the ones who are compelled (Matt 5:9) [Practice]
