# John 8:24

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "That is why I said to you: You will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am the one, you will die in your sins."

## JW Usage

Witnesses read "I am the one" as "I am the Messiah" — Jesus identifying himself as God's promised anointed, not making a deity claim. The same Greek phrase egō eimi is noted as occurring in the mouth of the blind man (John 9:9) and treated as ordinary self-identification, not as a divine title. Jesus' warning that failure to believe leads to dying in one's sins is treated as a warning about rejecting the Messiah, not about rejecting God.

## Protestant Usage

Notice what is at stake here: Jesus says belief in his identity is the condition for not dying in your sins. No prophet, no angel, no merely-human Messiah ever made belief in their identity a condition for forgiveness. The Old Testament background is Isaiah 43:10 — "that you may know and have faith in me and understand that I am the same One." The Hebrew is ani hu, "I am he," which the Septuagint renders egō eimi — exactly the phrase Jesus uses unpredicated in John 8:24. The parallel is even tighter at John 13:19, where Jesus says "that you may believe that I am he" — echoing Isaiah 43:10 verbatim. Jesus is not claiming a Messiah's office; he is claiming the divine self- designation of YHWH and staking your eternal destiny on recognising it.

## NWT Issue

The Greek text reads simply egō eimi ("I am") with no predicate. The NWT supplies "the one" — going further than the cautious KJV/ESV/NASB rendering of "I am he" (with "he" italicised as supplied). The added predicate flattens what John has structured as an absolute self-identification claim — the same egō eimi Jesus uses at 8:58 ("Before Abraham came into existence, I have been"), which the NWT does render distinctively to soften the Exodus 3:14 echo. Once "the one" is supplied, the salvific weight Jesus puts on the phrase reduces to "I am the Messiah" rather than to the divine self-disclosure of Isaiah 43:10.
