# John 18:20

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

## JW Usage

John 18:20 sits awkwardly inside JW practice rather than JW theology. The Watchtower has historically cited it in passing to underline that Jesus' teaching ministry was public and that the early church likewise preached openly — but the verse is rarely brought to the forefront, because every move the Watchtower makes toward institutional secrecy cuts against it. The confidential elders' manual Shepherd the Flock of God, the gradual-disclosure model used in initial Bible studies, the withholding of distinctive doctrines (Armageddon destruction of non-JWs, blood policy, shunning) until after emotional commitment, and the legal-vs-ecclesiastical distinction made under oath in the Lösch declaration all sit in tension with Jesus' "I said nothing in secret." The verse is therefore quietly avoided in JW literature except where it can be limited to street-preaching ministry.

## Protestant Usage

John 18:20 is Jesus' own answer to the high priest's interrogation: "I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and I said nothing in secret." It is the foundational text for ministerial transparency. Paul echoes the same standard at Acts 20:20 ("I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that were profitable") and Acts 20:27 ("I have not held back from telling you all the counsel of God") — the very passages JWs love to quote in defence of door-to-door ministry. Paul makes the underlying ethic explicit at 2 Corinthians 4:2: "we have renounced the shameful, underhanded things, not walking with cunning or adulterating the word of God; but by making the truth manifest, we recommend ourselves to every human conscience." Paul also affirms at 1 Thessalonians 2:3 that his exhortation never arose "from error or from uncleanness or with deceit." John 18:20 thus becomes the litmus test for any organisation that claims apostolic continuity: the Watchtower's confidential elders' manual, its gradual disclosure strategy, and its corporate-vs-spiritual evasions in court are measured against the standard Jesus set in his own trial. A religion that needs to conceal its full teaching to be accepted is not behaving the way Jesus said he behaved.
