# James 1:27

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

## JW Usage

JWs accept the verse but redefine "pure worship" primarily as preaching the good news — the greatest charity is offering people everlasting life. Disaster relief within the organisation demonstrates love, but community charitable works are deprioritised because "this system will be replaced by God's Kingdom." James 1:27 is acknowledged but subordinated to the preaching imperative. Civic engagement such as civil rights activism, voting, or community service is prohibited under the neutrality doctrine.

## Protestant Usage

James defines pure religion as "caring for orphans and widows in their tribulation and keeping oneself without spot from the world" — not preaching quotas, not meeting attendance, not field service hours. Jesus' "tax collector test" in Matthew 5:46-47 sharpens the point: "if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?" Loving only within the group is what even pagans do — it cannot be the distinguishing mark of true religion. The verse pairs with Galatians 6:10 ("let us work what is good toward all, but especially toward those related to us in the faith") to establish a biblical ethic that faces outward toward the broader community, not only inward toward the congregation. The Watchtower's neutrality doctrine prohibited Witnesses from participating in the civil rights movement — the same rule that produced the "no wars" record also kept them off the bridge at Selma.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [James Defines Pure Religion — and It Isn't Preaching](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/james127-pure-religion.md) — James 1:27 / Matthew 5:46-47 / Galatians 6:10 [Practice]
- [What Cosmic Neutrality Forbade at Selma](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/civil-rights-movement-prohibited.md) — Whatever you did for the least of these my brothers, you did for me (Matt 25:40) [Practice]
- [The Civic Cost of Cosmic Neutrality](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/cosmic-neutrality-civic-cost.md) — Jesus said 'my kingdom is not of this world' — not 'my followers must abandon the world' (John 18:36) [Practice]
