# James 1:17

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "Every good gift and every perfect present is from above, coming down from the Father of the celestial lights, who does not vary or change like the shifting shadows."

## JW Usage

JWs cite James 1:17 in two main settings. First, to defend the doctrine of new light — the idea that Jehovah's understanding given to his organisation grows progressively brighter, while Jehovah himself does not change. The "no shifting shadows" clause is read as underwriting the organisation's authority to update teachings without charging Jehovah himself with inconsistency. Second, in apologetic contexts, to credit Jehovah as the source of every good gift in contrast to the satanic counterfeit allegedly producing worldly flourishing outside the organisation. The verse is held with affection — many Witnesses know it by heart and feel its warmth.

## Protestant Usage

James 1:17 is one of the cleanest common-grace texts in the New Testament: every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of heavenly lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. The text is generous in scope (every good gift), specific in source (the Father), and absolute in his unchanging character (no variation, no shadow). On the doorstep, pair this with Matthew 5:45 (the Father sends rain on the just and unjust) and Acts 14:17 (rain and fruitful seasons given to nations who did not know him). The deeper move is to ask the Witness whether the verse's "no shifting shadows" can survive a publishing record in which positions on family separation have cycled three times in seventy-seven years (Awake! 1947, Watchtower 1952, the 2024 removal-rebrand). If Jehovah does not shift, the shifting must be the organisation's. The verse becomes a question about which institution's claims actually match the unchanging Father of heavenly lights it praises.
