# Hebrews 11:5

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

## JW Usage

To preserve the teaching that only Jesus has gone to heaven, the Watchtower reads Hebrews 11:5 as describing a compassionate relocation or merciful death-without-suffering, rather than a bodily translation out of this age. "Transferred" (the NWT's rendering of metetethe) is read as "moved elsewhere" — not "taken up." And "did not see death" is stretched to mean "did not experience the anguish of dying," which the Greek does not permit.

## Protestant Usage

Hebrews 11:5 is the decisive New Testament commentary on Genesis 5:24, and its phrase "so as not to see death" is unanswerable. A peaceful death is still death seen — the person still dies. The author of Hebrews makes the point explicit and redundant: Enoch was transferred, he did not see death, and he could not be found because God took him. Three clauses, each ruling out the merciful-death reading. Enoch is therefore the Old Testament's second witness alongside Elijah to bodily translation — two human beings taken out of this age without dying. The Watchtower's 1914 invisible-parousia theology needs "only Jesus went to heaven" to hold, but Hebrews 11:5 is the text that pulls the thread. Doorstep form: "Your own NWT says Enoch did not see death. If he died peacefully, did he see death or not?"
