# Hebrews 10:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses restrict Hebrews 10:19's invitation to enter the Most Holy Place to the 144,000 anointed class. They teach that only the anointed have priestly access to God's presence through Christ's blood, while the "great crowd" relates to God indirectly through the anointed remnant and the organisation. The verse is cited in Watchtower literature to reinforce the two-tier system: the anointed enter the Most Holy Place, and the great crowd remains outside it. This reading supports the claim that ordinary Witnesses need the organisation as an intermediary rather than approaching God directly. It also underpins the Memorial practice, where only the anointed partake of the emblems as covenant participants.

## Protestant Usage

Protestants read Hebrews 10:19 as an invitation extended to every believer without distinction. The writer addresses all his Christian readers as "brothers" (v. 19) and urges them collectively to draw near to God with full assurance (v. 22). The tearing of the temple curtain at Christ's death (Matthew 27:51) — from top to bottom by God's own act — symbolises the removal of all barriers between God and his people. This verse is a cornerstone of the universal priesthood of all believers: because Christ's blood has opened the way, every Christian is a priest with direct access to the Father. No mediating class, no organisational intermediary, is required. Peter confirms this by calling the whole church — ordinary believers across five Roman provinces — "a royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9), deliberately echoing Exodus 19:6 where the entire nation of Israel was a kingdom of priests. The Hebrews 10:19 invitation and the 1 Peter 2:9 declaration form a unified witness: Christ has made every believer a priest, and the veil is torn for all.
