# Galatians 5:1

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.

## JW Usage

Galatians 5:1 — "for such freedom Christ set us free; therefore stand firm and do not be confined again in a yoke of slavery" — is one of the verses the Watchtower cannot easily metabolise, and so it is largely avoided in publications addressed to the rank and file. When the verse does appear, "freedom" is redefined as freedom from "false religion" (Christendom) and "the yoke of slavery" is reapplied to denominational Christianity, with the Watchtower's own elaborate code of conduct (beard ban for elders, banned holidays, prohibited associations, mandatory shunning, blood policy, dress and grooming requirements) presented as the alternative to slavery rather than as a slavery of its own. The verse's natural force — that Paul applied "yoke of slavery" to law-keeping itself rather than to the wrong sort of law — is left unexplored.

## Protestant Usage

Galatians 5:1 is the verse where Paul names the trap and sets the alarm: a believer who steps back into law-keeping as the basis of standing with God has stepped back into slavery, and the freedom Christ purchased is forfeited. The verse leans forward into 5:2-4 — "if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you... you who are trying to be declared righteous by means of law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen away from the undeserved kindness." This is not hyperbole; it is Paul's most strongly worded warning in the letter. For the Watchtower system the implications are direct: the JW who is told that salvation requires "exercising faith PLUS field service PLUS meeting attendance PLUS loyalty to the Faithful and Discreet Slave PLUS enduring to Armageddon" is precisely the figure Paul is warning. The "plus" is the yoke; the freedom is the freedom Christ bought; the alarm is for any system, ancient or modern, that adds law-keeping to faith as the ground of acceptance. Used in arguments 046 (matthew11- easy-yoke), 082 (no-honourable-exit), 086 (shunning-admonish-as- brother), 156 (galatians5-6-faith-working-love), and 161 (jw- beard-ban) — the head verse for the Galatian-parallel critique of the Watchtower's law system.
