# Acts 1:9

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower teaches Christ's second coming is an invisible presence (parousia) that began in 1914, not a visible bodily return (Reasoning From the Scriptures, pp. 312-317). Acts 1:9 is typically passed over quickly or re-read in combination with John 14:19 ("the world will see me no more") as if the ascension signalled the final end of visible bodily manifestation. The rs book argues that any expectation of a future visible bodily return has been contaminated by dispensational Evangelical teaching. The 2013 NWT revision also retains "sky" rather than "heaven" in Acts 1:9-11, subtly softening the cosmic weight of the text.

## Protestant Usage

The NWT at Acts 1:9 reads: "after he had said these things, while they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud caught him up from their sight." Four data points are visible in the text itself. The disciples "were looking on" — it was a visible event. "He was lifted up" — bodily elevation. "A cloud caught him up" — the cloud is the endpoint of visibility, not a disguise. And the immediate angelic commentary in verse 11: "This Jesus who was taken up from you into the sky will come in the same manner as you have seen him going into the sky." The angels specify the mode of the return — "in the same manner." Paired with Revelation 1:7 ("every eye will see him, and those who pierced him") and 1 Corinthians 15:51-53 (mortal bodies "put on" immortality — transformed, not discarded), Acts 1:9 becomes the decisive text on the bodily, visible character of the final return. The invisible-parousia of 1914 contradicts the angels' own description: whatever 1914 was, it was not "in the same manner as you have seen him going into the sky." Daniel 7:13-14 closes a second exegetical loop — the Son of Man "coming on the clouds" goes UP to the Ancient of Days to receive the kingdom, matching the ascension rather than an invisible earthly arrival. The Watchtower's 1914 position forces the Witness to correct the two angels who spoke to the eleven apostles.
