# 1 Corinthians 15:45

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower reads "the last Adam" as Paul's statement that Jesus is a perfect human — a one-to-one counterpart to the first Adam. Just as Adam was a man, Jesus is a man, sent as the "corresponding ransom" (1 Tim 2:6) to undo Adam's damage as a man, not as God. The "life-giving spirit" phrase is read as evidence that Jesus was raised as a spirit creature and now functions as a life-source to the 144,000. The contrast with Adam is treated as equality of substance with a post-resurrection upgrade.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's point is precisely the opposite of the JW read. The contrast is not equality of substance but asymmetric function: Adam received life (became a living soul); the last Adam gives life (became a life-giving spirit). The ability to give life to the dead is Jehovah's own prerogative — Deuteronomy 32:39, 1 Samuel 2:6. John 5:21 puts the Son on the same line: "the Son also gives life to whomever he wishes." At the door, keep it small: "Adam was someone life was given TO; Jesus is someone who gives life. That is the biblical description of what only Jehovah does. What kind of being has authority to give life to the dead?"

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [The Last Adam — More Than a Man](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/1corinthians15-45-last-adam.md) — 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 [Deity of Christ]
- [The Incarnation Is Addition, Not Compression](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/word-became-flesh-not-michael.md) — Why the Logos-to-Michael-to-Jesus-to-Michael cycle does not match the New Testament [Deity of Christ]
