# Only 144,000 Go to Heaven — The Rest Live on Earth

## Watchtower Teaching

JWs teach that God has two separate classes of saved people with two different destinies: exactly 144,000 'anointed' Christians who will reign with Christ in heaven, and an unlimited 'great crowd' who will live forever on a paradise earth. Only the anointed partake of communion, are 'born again,' or are adopted as God's children. This two-tier system has no precedent in first-century Christianity and creates a spiritual hierarchy absent from the New Testament.

## Key Implication

If only 144,000 are born again, then most JWs are excluded from the new covenant (Hebrews 8:10–12), are not God's children (Romans 8:16–17), and have no mediator — the Watchtower explicitly teaches that Jesus mediates only for the anointed. Yet 1 Timothy 2:5 says there is 'one mediator between God and mankind.' Revelation 7:9 places the 'great crowd' before the throne and in God's temple (naos) — the same location used for heavenly scenes throughout Revelation. And the 144,000 in Revelation 14 are described as male Jewish virgins from twelve literal tribes — if the number is literal, so are those qualifications.
