# No Witness May Claim Present Possession of Eternal Life

## Watchtower Teaching

> The Watchtower teaches that no one can be certain of salvation until they have proved faithful to the end through field service, meeting attendance, and unbroken loyalty to the organisation. Saying 'I know I have eternal life right now' is treated as presumption. The 144,000 anointed have a stronger claim, but the millions of 'other sheep' are counselled to live with calibrated hope rather than assurance. Asked directly whether they know they have eternal life, most Witnesses will answer 'no' — the system trains them to say so.

## Key Implication

Present assurance is not an aberrant Protestant novelty — it is what the New Testament explicitly promises. 1 John 5:13 says 'these things I have written to you… that you may KNOW that you have eternal life.' John 5:24 says the believer 'has passed over' (perfect tense, completed action) from death to life. Romans 8:1 says 'there is now no condemnation' — now, not at the end of a lifetime of works. The Watchtower effectively quarantines these verses by restricting them to the 144,000 or by reading them as provisional promises. Assurance is not arrogance; it is trusting the sufficiency of Christ's finished work (John 19:30) rather than supplementing it with endless performance. The inability to say 'I know' is the clearest symptom that the Watchtower's gospel is not the apostles' gospel.
