# You're Already a Trinitarian — The Watchtower's Eternal Logos Problem

*If two persons existed before creation, where's the "one"?*

## Doorstep Question

> "The Watchtower teaches that Jesus, as the Logos, existed before all other creation, alongside Jehovah, sharing Jehovah's wisdom and his life-giving power. That's two distinct persons, both pre-creation, both divine in nature. May I ask — where, in that picture, is the "one"?"

## JW Claim

Jesus is the first and only direct creation of Jehovah — the firstborn
of all creation (Col 1:15), the only-begotten (John 3:16). He existed
before all other things as the Word, but he was created. He is divine
in nature, mighty, used by Jehovah to create all other things — but
he is not Jehovah, and he is not God in the Trinitarian sense.

## Strategy

The Watchtower's own doctrine of Christ already grants the structural conditions of the Trinity — it just adds the word "created" at the start and stops short of the third person. Walk the JW through their own claims: (1) the Logos existed before all other creation; (2) he was personally distinct from Jehovah; (3) he shared Jehovah's attributes (wisdom, life-giving power, the title "a god" in NWT John 1:1); (4) he acted as the agent of creation. Each of these is also affirmed in Trinitarian theology. The JW has already conceded the framework — two eternal-in-some-sense, distinct, divine-in-nature persons acting in unity. The Trinity simply names the framework and closes the gap by recognising that "before all other creation" actually means uncreated, and by including the Holy Spirit.

## Key Insight

The Watchtower's own Christology grants nearly every clause of the Trinity — two persons, both pre-creation, both divine in nature, distinct from each other. The disagreement isn't really about the shape of the doctrine; it's about whether the Logos is uncreated.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "But the Watchtower teaches that Jesus was created. That's the difference."

**Counter:** I understand that's the Watchtower's position. But ask the next question — when was the Son created? Before the universe? Before time itself? Proverbs 8:22-25 in the Watchtower's reading puts the Son's "begetting" before any other creative act, before the deep, before the mountains. So before time — which makes the Son not *in* time but somehow before time. That's not the category of a creature; that's exactly the category of God. Colossians 1:17 says "he is before all things" — and Greek *pro pantōn* means *prior to all*, not first within all. There is no created thing "before time"; there is only God.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Proverbs 8 is wisdom personified, not Jesus."

**Counter:** Some Christians read Proverbs 8 that way, and that's a fair reading. But notice: the Watchtower uses Proverbs 8 to teach that *Jesus* was created. So we're working with the Watchtower's framework. If Proverbs 8 isn't about Jesus, then the Watchtower has lost its strongest "created Jesus" proof-text. If it *is* about Jesus, then the Watchtower has just affirmed a pre-temporal, pre-creation Son sharing in Jehovah's wisdom — which is the Trinity's claim about the Logos.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "He's still subordinate to Jehovah — he calls him 'God'."

**Counter:** Subordination in role does not mean subordination in nature. A son is fully human like his father, even though he submits to his father. The Son submits in role (1 Cor 11:3) while sharing in nature (Phil 2:6 "in the form of God", Col 2:9 "all the fullness of deity dwells bodily"). The Watchtower already grants the shared-nature part — its own Christology says Jesus is divine, a "mighty god", with attributes of Jehovah. The Trinitarian only asks: if he shares the divine nature, why is he not God?

### Response 4

**JW says:** "The Trinity has three persons. Even if you've shown two, you haven't shown three."

**Counter:** Fair — let's add the third. Acts 5:3-4: lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. The Spirit is grieved (Eph 4:30), teaches (John 14:26), speaks (Acts 13:2), intercedes (Rom 8:26), searches the deep things of God (1 Cor 2:10-11). That's not an impersonal "active force" — that's a third personal subject sharing in the divine nature. Now you have three. And the Watchtower's own pneumatology already treats the Spirit as performing personal actions while denying personal status — which is a category inconsistency on their side, not ours.

## What to Avoid

Don't claim the Watchtower teaches Jesus is "eternal" in the strict sense — they don't, and the JW will correctly push back. Use their own language: "before all other creation", "first and only direct creation", "Logos existed before time". The tu-quoque works on the structural fact (two pre-creation distinct divine-natured persons), not on a contested claim about literal eternality.

## Homework

Read Colossians 1:15-20 in one sitting. Notice how Paul says "before all things" (v. 17), "all things were created through him and for him" (v. 16), and "in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell" (v. 19). Then ask: does that picture fit a creature, however exalted?
