# Volunteer or Servant? — Why the Son's Obedience Cannot Be Angelic

*John 10:18 / Philippians 2:6-8 / Hebrews 1:14*

## Doorstep Question

> "In your view, when Jesus came to earth and went to the cross — was He obeying an order from Jehovah the way an angel obeys an order, or did He volunteer? Read John 10:18 in the New World Translation: "No man has taken it from me; I lay it down of my own initiative." Does that sound like an angel under orders?"

## JW Claim

Jesus existed in heaven as Michael the Archangel before His earthly
ministry. He obediently carried out Jehovah's will, came to earth as
a perfect man, and gave His life as a ransom in submission to His
Father's command.

## Strategy

Use a vocational analogy the JW can grasp immediately. A police officer obeys their sergeant — not because they want to, but because the sergeant has authority over them. They might even refuse an unlawful order. Now compare that with Jesus going to the cross. Read three passages: (1) John 10:17-18 — "I lay it down of my own initiative… this commandment I received from my Father." Notice both: He volunteers AND He receives a commandment from the Father. (2) Philippians 2:6-8 — He "thought it not robbery to be equal with God" but "emptied himself, taking on a slave's form" — a deliberate divestment, not a created creature carrying out instructions. (3) Hebrews 1:14 — angels are "ministering spirits sent out to render service." That is the angelic vocation: dispatched, sent, ordered. The Son's obedience in the gospels is qualitatively different — He receives the Father's mission AS the eternal Son, freely, from love. Then ask: an angel could not say "I lay down my life of my own initiative" — angels don't have lives to lay down. Only the eternal God-man can volunteer the divine life into the cross.

## Key Insight

Angelic obedience is dispatched obedience — angels are sent, not consulted. The Son's obedience is volitional within the Godhead — He chose to come, from eternity past, in perfect harmony with the Father's will. That distinction collapses if Jesus is "merely an angel," because angels don't volunteer, and they don't possess a life worth offering as ransom for billions of souls.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Jesus did obey His Father — that proves He's not equal."

**Counter:** Obedience does not require inferiority of nature. A son who is fully a man — same nature as his father — can obey his father. The Bible never reasons "Jesus obeyed therefore Jesus is a different kind of being." Philippians 2:6-8 says exactly the opposite — He was "in the form of God" AND "emptied himself, taking the form of a slave." His obedience flows from voluntary humility, not creaturely status. And John 10:18 explicitly says: "No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own accord." That is not "angel under orders" language.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Of course He laid it down — but only because Jehovah commanded it."

**Counter:** Read the verse one more time. "No man has taken it from me — I lay it down of my own initiative. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from my Father." Notice the order: HE has authority — to lay it down, to take it up. The Father's commandment is the harmonious mission they share, not a coercion. Compare with angels in Hebrews 1:14 — angels are "sent out." They have no authority to decline, to volunteer, or to determine the manner of their service. Jesus has all three.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Michael the Archangel is the highest-ranking angel — he could volunteer."

**Counter:** Show me one verse where Michael "volunteers" or has authority over his own life or another's. In Daniel 10:13 Michael is "one of the foremost princes" who comes when DISPATCHED. In Jude 9 he doesn't even rebuke Satan on his own authority — he says "May Jehovah rebuke you." Michael, the highest angel, defers to Jehovah's authority for words. Now read Mark 2:5 — Jesus says "Your sins are forgiven" on His own authority, and the Pharisees correctly ask, "Who can forgive sins except one, God?" Jesus speaks like Jehovah; Michael speaks like a sent servant. The contrast is decisive.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "You're making this more complicated than it needs to be."

**Counter:** It is simple, actually. An angel under orders cannot say "I lay down my life of my own initiative" — angels don't possess such authority. So either Jesus did possess that authority — which means He is more than an angel — or He misspoke about His own mission. The Watchtower can't have it both ways.

## What to Avoid

Don't get drawn into Old Testament Michael identifications too early — that's a separate argument (jesus-not-michael). Stay on the John 10:18 / Philippians 2 contrast: angels are dispatched; the Son volunteers.

## Homework

Read John 10:14-18 and Hebrews 1:14 side by side. Underline every verb attached to angels (sent, render, ministering). Then underline every verb attached to Jesus (lay down, take up, authority, of my own initiative). Ask: do these belong to the same category of being?
