# The Lamb Receives Identical Worship to God

*Revelation 5:12-14 / Revelation 22:8-9 / Isaiah 42:8*

## Doorstep Question

> "In Revelation, angels refuse worship and say 'Worship God!' But the Lamb receives the exact same worship as God and no one says 'Do not do that.' If Jesus is really Michael the archangel, why doesn't he refuse worship the way every other angel does?"

## JW Claim

Worship belongs exclusively to Jehovah. Jesus receives honour and
obeisance as God's appointed King, but not worship. The praise directed
at the Lamb in Revelation 5 is kingly honour that ultimately passes
through Jesus to Jehovah.

## Strategy

This argument uses a simple three-step comparison inside the book of Revelation itself. First, open to Revelation 22:8-9 in the NWT and read together: John falls before an angel, and the angel says 'Do not do that! Worship God!' Establish the principle — faithful angels refuse worship. Second, turn to Revelation 5:13-14 in the NWT and read together: 'To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb be the blessing and the honour and the glory and the might forever and ever.' Then the elders 'fell down and worshipped.' Point out three things: (1) the doxology is directed to God AND the Lamb jointly — same praise, same recipients, same duration; (2) the NWT itself uses 'worshipped' here, not 'did obeisance'; (3) no one says 'Do not do that!' Third, press the contrast: if the Lamb were a created angel, he would refuse worship as every faithful angel does in Revelation. The silence is deafening. Either the Lamb shares God's identity, or the greatest act of idolatry in the Bible takes place in God's own throne room with no correction.

## Key Insight

The NWT uses 'worshipped' in Revelation 5:14 where the worship is directed at both God and the Lamb jointly. Angels refuse worship in the same book, but the Lamb accepts it without correction — a distinction only deity can explain.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "The Lamb receives honour, not worship. Revelation 5:12 lists kingly attributes, not divine worship."

**Counter:** The same attributes appear in Revelation 7:12 directed at God: 'Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever!' The two lists are functionally identical. If it is worship when directed at God, it is worship when directed at the Lamb. And verse 13 explicitly joins them as co-recipients: 'To Him who sits on the throne AND to the Lamb' — same praise, same recipients, same duration.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "The worship in 5:14 is directed at Jehovah on the throne, not at the Lamb."

**Counter:** Verse 13 establishes the object of worship: 'To the One sitting on the throne AND to the Lamb.' The coordinating conjunction 'and' joins both as co-recipients. The worship in verse 14 responds to the doxology of verse 13 — it is directed at both. Even the NWT preserves this: 'To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb.' And the NWT uses 'worshipped' in verse 14, not 'did obeisance' — conceding that the act is genuine worship directed at both.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Worship passes through Jesus to Jehovah — Jesus is the channel, not the object."

**Counter:** The text does not say 'To Him who sits on the throne THROUGH the Lamb' — it says 'To Him who sits on the throne AND to the Lamb.' The preposition 'to' is repeated for both — each is a distinct recipient. No biblical text teaches the concept of worship passing through a creature. When the angel refuses worship in Revelation 22:9, he does not say 'worship God through me' — he says 'Worship God!' If the Lamb were merely a channel, the text would read differently.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Proskuneo can mean obeisance, not worship. Context determines meaning."

**Counter:** Agreed that context determines meaning. And the context of Revelation 5:8-14 could not be clearer: a heavenly throne-room scene where every creature in existence directs the same doxological formula to God and the Lamb jointly, followed by prostration that even the NWT calls 'worship.' If proskuneo does not mean worship here — in heaven, before God's throne, directed at the Lamb alongside God, by every creature — then when does it ever mean worship?

### Response 5

**JW says:** "The Lamb is a symbol, not a literal person receiving worship."

**Counter:** In Revelation 5:5-6, John hears about 'the Lion of the tribe of Judah' and sees 'a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain.' The Lion and the Lamb are the same person — Jesus. He is called 'the Lamb' 28 times in Revelation and is consistently treated as a personal agent who acts, speaks, and receives worship. If the Lamb were merely a symbol, then every creature in existence is worshipping a metaphor — which makes no sense.

### Response 6

**JW says:** "Angels bow before Jesus as God's appointed King — like subjects before a human king."

**Counter:** But when John bows before an angel in Revelation 19:10 and 22:8-9, the angel immediately rejects it: 'Do not do that! I am a fellow servant. Worship God!' Angels refuse proskuneo directed at them. Yet the Lamb accepts it without correction. If the Lamb were an angel (Michael), he would refuse worship just as every faithful angel does. Jesus never refuses worship — not in Revelation, not in the Gospels (Matthew 14:33, 28:9, 28:17; John 20:28).

## What to Avoid

Don't get drawn into a debate about the Greek word proskuneo in isolation. Stay in Revelation and let the contrast between the angel's refusal and the Lamb's acceptance speak for itself. Avoid the progressive hymn structure (four expanding circles) at the doorstep — it is too academic. Save it for a deeper Bible study.

## Homework

Read Revelation 4 and 5 together so you can picture the throne room, then read Revelation 19:10 and 22:8-9, where the angel refuses worship. Check the NWT yourself at Revelation 5:13-14 to confirm that verse 13 says 'to the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb' and that verse 14 says the elders 'worshipped'. Compare Revelation 5:12 with 7:12 so you can set the two lists of praise side by side. Practise the doorstep question aloud, gently. Rehearse the reply that worship passes through Jesus to Jehovah: the text says 'and to the Lamb', not 'through the Lamb', and the angel says simply 'Worship God!'
