# Jesus' Eternality

*Psalm 102 → Hebrews 1*

**Strength:** Strong | **Tone:** Excellent | **Topic:** Deity of Christ

## Doorstep Question

> "Would you agree that 'your years will never end' in Psalm 102 is only true of Jehovah? Now let's turn to Hebrews 1:10–12 — who is this passage speaking about in context?"

## JW Claim

Jesus is a created being; only Jehovah is eternal.

## Strategy

Read Psalm 102:25–27 in the NWT, which speaks of Jehovah's eternity. Ask if this could be true of anyone other than Jehovah. They'll say no. Then turn to Hebrews 1:10–12, which quotes this exact passage — and in context, Hebrews 1 is explicitly about the Son. Even jw.org cross-references these passages.

## Key Insight

An attribute that belongs to Jehovah alone — eternality — is applied to Jesus in the New Testament.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Hebrews 1:3 says Jesus is the 'representation' of God — a copy, not God himself."

**Counter:** The Greek word is charakter — it means the exact imprint a signet ring leaves in wax. The imprint shares the very nature of the original. And apaugasma ('radiance') means brightness that flows from a light source — you cannot have sunlight without the sun, and you cannot have the sun without its radiance. Both terms describe someone who shares God's nature, not a lesser copy. Even your NWT says 'exact representation of his very being' — that's identity of nature, not inferiority.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Hebrews 1:4 says he 'became better than the angels' — that implies he was once lower."

**Counter:** Hebrews 2:9 explains this: Jesus 'was made a little lower than the angels' through the incarnation — he voluntarily took on human nature. After his resurrection he was exalted. The 'becoming better' refers to the post-resurrection exaltation, not an ontological upgrade. Philippians 2:6–9 says the same thing: he was in the form of God, emptied himself, then God highly exalted him. He didn't become God — he returned to the glory he had before (John 17:5).

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Hebrews 1:10–12 is about Jehovah, not Jesus."

**Counter:** Read Hebrews 1 from verse 5 onwards. Every statement is about the Son: 'to which of the angels did he ever say…' (v5), 'about the Son he says' (v8). The entire chapter contrasts the Son with angels.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "'Through whom he made' means Jesus was God's instrument — an agent, not the Creator himself."

**Counter:** Your NWT of Isaiah 44:24 says Jehovah was 'by myself' when he created — 'Who was with me?' If Jesus was a separate creature used as a tool, then Jehovah was not by himself, and the verse is false. The only way both texts are true is if the Son is included in who Jehovah is. And Colossians 1:16 goes further — all things were created not just 'through him' but 'for him.' An instrument does not have creation made for its own sake. Even your NWT preserves that wording.

### Response 5

**JW says:** "'Sustains all things' is delegated authority — Jehovah gave Jesus that task."

**Counter:** Nehemiah 9:6 says Jehovah alone 'gives life to all things.' Sustaining every atom in the universe requires omnipotence and omnipresence — these are not transferable skills. Colossians 1:17 says 'in him all things hold together.' If Jesus stopped sustaining creation, it would cease to exist. No creature has that kind of power. Your own NWT of Hebrews 1:3 says he 'sustains all things by the word of his power' — that is a divine prerogative, not a job description.

### Response 6

**JW says:** "Hebrews 1:1-2 says God spoke through the prophets long ago and now through a Son. So every time Jehovah speaks in the Old Testament, that's the Father, not Jesus."

**Counter:** Hebrews 1:1-2 contrasts two ways God has spoken: then through the prophets, now through a Son. It is about the messengers, not about who was speaking in the Old Testament, and it doesn't say the Son was absent from it. In fact the same chapter points the other way. Verse 10 takes Psalm 102, a prayer addressed to Jehovah, and says it about the Son: "At the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth." John does something similar. In John 12:41 your NWT says "Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory, and he spoke about him," and the context makes clear that "him" is Jesus. When did Isaiah see that glory? In Isaiah 6:1 he saw "Jehovah sitting on a lofty and elevated throne", and in Isaiah 6:5 he cried out, "my eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of armies himself!" Your own Study Edition note on John 12:41 says "this refers to Jesus' prehuman glory alongside Jehovah." Paul says the rock that followed Israel in the wilderness "meant the Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4). A few verses later, in 10:9, your NWT reads "Neither let us put Jehovah to the test." Most Greek manuscripts, including the oldest copy we have of this letter, read "Christ" there, and that is why many translations say "we must not put Christ to the test." Some early copies read "the Lord" and a few read "God", so I won't build everything on that verse. But taken together, Hebrews, John and Paul all place the Son inside the Old Testament story of Jehovah, not outside it. If Isaiah's vision of Jehovah on the throne was a sight of Jesus' glory, can the Jehovah of the Old Testament be the Father alone?

## What to Avoid

Do not say 'Jesus IS Jehovah' too quickly. Let them arrive at the tension themselves.

## Homework

Read Psalm 102:25–27 and then Hebrews 1:1–12 in the NWT until you can trace the chapter's flow from memory: 'to which of the angels' (verse 5), 'about the Son he says' (verse 8), then the psalm quoted in verses 10–12. On jw.org, confirm for yourself that the cross-references link Hebrews 1:10–12 back to Psalm 102. Practise asking aloud whether 'your years will never end' could be true of anyone but Jehovah, then pause and let them answer. Expect the reply that verses 10–12 are about Jehovah, not the Son, and rehearse walking them back through the chapter from verse 5. Resist saying 'Jesus is Jehovah' yourself; let them meet the tension.
