# One Flock / Great Crowd in Heaven

*John 10:16 / Revelation 7:9*

**Strength:** Strong | **Tone:** Good | **Topic:** Eschatology

## Doorstep Question

> "Jesus says in John 10:16 there will be 'one flock, one shepherd' — not two tiers. And the 'great crowd' in Revelation 7:9 is described as standing before the throne in God's temple. Isn't that heaven, not earth?"

## JW Claim

144,000 anointed go to heaven; the 'great crowd' lives on paradise earth.

## Strategy

The 'other sheep' of John 10:16 are Gentiles being brought into the same flock — not a separate earthly class. Jesus the Jewish Messiah is speaking to a Jewish audience: 'this fold' is Israel, and the 'other sheep not of this fold' are the Gentiles He will bring in so that there will be 'one flock, one shepherd.' This is exactly what Paul describes in Ephesians 2:14–16 — Christ broke down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile to create 'one new man.' The JW two-tier system (144,000 anointed in heaven, great crowd on earth) replaces the Jew/Gentile distinction with an anointed/non-anointed distinction that the text does not support. The 'great crowd' in Revelation 7:9 stands before the throne and serves God in His temple — heavenly temple language that places them in heaven, not on earth.

## Key Insight

One flock, one shepherd — not two tiers. The 'other sheep' are Gentiles, not an earthly class. And the great crowd serves God in His ναός (naos) — the inner sanctuary, which in Revelation is always heaven.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "The great crowd serves before the throne, not in heaven."

**Counter:** Revelation 7:15 says they serve God 'in his temple' — and the Greek word is ναός (naos), meaning the inner sanctuary, the holy of holies. In Revelation, ναός is never used for anything earthly. Every occurrence refers to the heavenly temple: Revelation 11:19 ('the temple of God in heaven was opened'), 14:15, 14:17, 15:5–8, 16:1, 16:17. If the great crowd serves in the ναός, they are in heaven. The Watchtower would need to explain why ναός means 'heaven' in every other verse of Revelation but suddenly means 'earth' in 7:15.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "The 144,000 and the great crowd are obviously two separate groups."

**Counter:** Revelation uses a literary pattern scholars call 'I heard / I saw.' In chapter 5, John hears about 'the Lion of Judah' (verse 5) then sees 'a Lamb standing as though slain' (verse 6). The Lion and the Lamb are the same person — Jesus. The identical structure appears in chapter 7: John hears the number '144,000' (verse 4) then sees 'a great crowd which no man could number' (verse 9). If heard = saw in chapter 5 (Lion = Lamb), then heard = saw in chapter 7 (144,000 = great crowd). Same literary pattern, same conclusion — one group, two descriptions. And notice: the tribal list in 7:5–8 does not match any historical Israelite census — Dan is missing, Levi is included as a land tribe, Manasseh is separated from Joseph. The whole picture is symbolic, not a literal head count.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The 144,000 receive the divine nature itself — see 2 Peter 1:4."

**Counter:** Compare what 2 Peter 1:4 actually says with what Russell wrote about it. The verse reads 'so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, now that you have escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.' The historic Christian reading is participation in God's holiness through union with Christ — sanctification, not ontological elevation. Now Russell in Studies in the Scriptures Vol I p 211 (which the 144,000 hope flows from): 'These, when born from the dead in the resurrection, will have the divine nature and form. This immortality, the independent, self-existent divine nature, is the life to which the narrow way leads.' Russell is treating 2 Peter 1:4 as elevation to deity — 'independent, self-existent' — but Scripture reserves that language for Jehovah alone (Isaiah 44:24 'I, Jehovah, am doing everything, stretching out the heavens by myself'; John 5:26 'just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted also to the Son to have life in himself' — granted, not independent). The Watchtower today softens the wording but keeps the framework: Insight on the Scriptures still applies 2 Peter 1:4 to the 144,000 as receiving 'the divine nature.' The question is straightforward: how is this not a second class of independent deity? And how does it cohere with Isaiah 43:10 — 'before me there was no god formed, nor shall there be any after me'?

### Response 4

**JW says:** "When you die, you're conscious of nothing — the dead just sleep until the resurrection."

**Counter:** Jesus told the thief on the cross 'today you will be with me in paradise' (Luke 23:43) — not 'in the future after a resurrection.' Paul says 'to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord' (2 Corinthians 5:8) and 'to depart and be with Christ, which is far better' (Philippians 1:23). Revelation 6:9–11 shows souls consciously crying out under the altar. Ecclesiastes 9:5 describes death from the perspective of life 'under the sun' — the earthly viewpoint. Jesus, who came from heaven, reveals what actually happens after death.

## What to Avoid

Don't get into detailed Revelation interpretation wars. Keep to the plain reading.

## Homework

Read John 10:16 in its setting, from the start of the chapter, until you can explain from memory who 'this fold' and the 'other sheep' are, then read Ephesians 2:14–16 alongside it. Read Revelation 7:9 within its chapter, noticing the move from what John hears in verse 4 to what he sees in verse 9, and mark 'in his temple' in verse 15. Check the NWT wording of Revelation 7:15 and 11:19 for yourself. Practise the doorstep question aloud, keeping to the plain reading rather than a contest over Revelation's symbols. Expect 'the great crowd serves before the throne, not in heaven'; rehearse the short reply that naos, the word for temple there, always refers to the heavenly temple in Revelation.
