# Christ's Promise to Those Their Family Cuts Off

*Matthew 19:29 / Mark 8:36 / Mark 10:29-30*

## Doorstep Question

> "Read Matthew 19:29 in your New World Translation: "Everyone that has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for the sake of my name will receive many times more, and will inherit everlasting life." Notice — Jesus is talking about people who lose their family because they followed Him. What does He promise them?"

## JW Claim

Loyal Witnesses are willing to leave family for the sake of the truth
— but the warning works the other way too. Anyone who leaves Jehovah's
organisation is treated as spiritually dead, because the apostle Paul
said "stop keeping company" with such (1 Corinthians 5:11). The
shunning policy is loving discipline.

## Strategy

This is for the JW who is privately wavering, or for the ex-JW Christian needing to hear the gospel applied to their grief. Use it pastorally, not combatively. Walk through three texts in the NWT. (1) Matthew 19:29 — Jesus promises that anyone who leaves family "for my name's sake" receives a hundredfold and inherits everlasting life. The promise is to the one CUT OFF from family because of Christ. (2) Mark 8:36 — "What benefit is it for a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" Set this against the JW exit-cost calculation. The Watchtower offers community in this life but stakes the soul on organisational compliance. Christ offers the reverse: come to Him and lose your family in this life, gain family-of-God in this life and the soul-saved everlasting life. (3) Mark 10:29-30 — "no one has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children… for the sake of the good news, who will not get a hundredfold now in this period of time… and in the coming system everlasting life." Then ask the gentle question: "If you ever have to choose between your family and Christ, which one has Jesus promised you the hundredfold for choosing?"

## Key Insight

The Watchtower frames leaving as the unbearable cost. Jesus frames staying — at the price of denying Him — as the unbearable cost. The JW exit-cost calculation has the math exactly backwards because it weighs only this life. Matthew 19:29 puts the eternal weight on the side of the one cut off for Christ.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Matthew 19:29 doesn't apply to JWs leaving the truth — it applies to people leaving the world to come INTO the truth."

**Counter:** Read Jesus' words again: "for the sake of my name." The criterion is not which religious organisation a person joins but Christ Himself. "My name" is not "the Watchtower's name." A JW who leaves family because they have come to follow JESUS — even if that means leaving the Kingdom Hall — is exactly the person Jesus describes. The verse cannot be reread to mean "for the sake of Watchtower membership."

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Apostates aren't losing family for Jesus — they're losing it because they sinned."

**Counter:** That assumes the ex-JW left for sinful reasons. Many leave because of unresolved doctrinal questions about the deity of Christ, the failure of 1914, or the suppression of internal criticism. They leave because they want to follow scripture more faithfully, not less. To call them "apostates" presupposes the Watchtower has the right to define who Jesus is. Matthew 19:29 doesn't read "everyone who leaves family for the sake of MY organisation."

### Response 3

**JW says:** "We don't shun — we just stop having spiritual association."

**Counter:** Pastorally, that distinction does not land where it lives. An ex-JW mother whose own children no longer come to family meals, do not pick up phone calls, do not invite her to grandchildren's weddings — does not experience this as "merely stopping spiritual association." She experiences it as the loss Matthew 19:29 describes. The question is not whether the policy uses the word "shun" but whether her loss falls under Christ's promised hundredfold reward. It does.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "Why would Jehovah want to break up families?"

**Counter:** He wouldn't. That's the point. Jesus said in Luke 12:51-53 — "do you imagine I came to give peace on earth? No, but rather division." Why? Because following Christ Himself is the dividing line. When the Watchtower stands between the JW and Christ, the family pain caused by leaving is the cost of choosing Christ over the organisation — and Matthew 19:29 says that cost is reimbursed a hundred times over.

## What to Avoid

Don't celebrate or trivialise the shunning loss. It is real, severe, and traumatic. Don't say "good riddance to those judgmental relatives." Honour the grief; locate it in Christ's promise.

## Homework

Read Matthew 19:27-30 and Mark 10:28-31 together. Notice the contexts — both come after the rich young ruler walks away unwilling to lose his earthly inheritance. Jesus' promise is for those who DID let go.
