# Soul and Body Are Distinct

*Matthew 10:28*

**Strength:** Very Strong | **Tone:** Excellent | **Topic:** Soul & Hell

## Doorstep Question

> "Your NWT of Matthew 10:28 says 'do not become fearful of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.' If the soul is just another word for the body or life, how can the body be killed while the soul cannot?"

## JW Claim

The soul (nephesh/psuche) simply means the person or the life force. There
is no separate immaterial soul. When the body dies, the person ceases to
exist entirely until the resurrection. 'The soul that sins, it shall die'
(Ezekiel 18:4).

## Strategy

This is one of the simplest and most powerful soul arguments. Open the NWT to Matthew 10:28: 'do not become fearful of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; but rather be in fear of him that can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.' Even in the NWT, Jesus draws a clear distinction: (1) Humans can kill the body. (2) Humans CANNOT kill the soul. (3) Only God can destroy both. If the soul were just the body or the life force, killing the body would kill the soul — but Jesus says it doesn't. The soul survives physical death. This is Jesus' own teaching, preserved even in the NWT.

## Key Insight

If the soul were identical to the body or life, killing the body would kill the soul. Jesus says it doesn't. The soul is something that persists beyond physical death — and only God has authority over it.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "'Soul' (psuche) just means 'life' here — don't fear those who can take your physical life."

**Counter:** If psuche means 'life' and Jesus is saying 'don't fear those who kill your body but can't kill your life' — that's a contradiction. If your body is killed, your life is killed. The only way the verse makes sense is if the soul is something distinct from the body that survives physical death. Jesus is contrasting two things that can happen to two different parts of you.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Ezekiel 18:4 says 'the soul that sins shall die' — so souls can die."

**Counter:** Yes — but notice what Jesus says in Matthew 10:28: only GOD can destroy the soul. Humans cannot. That's the distinction. Souls are not indestructible, but they are not killed when the body dies. Only God has the authority and power to deal with the soul. That's exactly why Jesus says to fear God rather than men — because God's authority extends beyond physical death to the soul itself.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Genesis 2:7 says man 'became a living soul' — the soul is the whole person, not a part."

**Counter:** Genesis says man became a living soul — which is true. But Matthew 10:28, spoken by Jesus himself, distinguishes the soul from the body. Both texts are Scripture. If we only had Genesis, your reading would be plausible. But Jesus adds revelation: the soul is something the body is not. When men kill the body, the soul continues. That is progressive revelation — later Scripture clarifies earlier Scripture. And your own NWT preserves this distinction.

## What to Avoid

Don't get drawn into a debate about Hebrew nephesh vs Greek psuche. The NWT's own English translation of Jesus' words makes the point clearly enough. Keep it simple: 'Your Bible says the soul survives the body's death. That's Jesus speaking.'

## Homework

Read Matthew 10:16-33 so you see the setting in which Jesus speaks about those who kill the body. Memorise verse 28 in the NWT wording quoted in this argument, then trace its three steps from memory: men kill the body, men cannot kill the soul, only God can destroy both. Practise the doorstep question aloud in one breath. Prepare for the reply that "soul" here just means "life," and rehearse why that makes the verse contradict itself. Have Ezekiel 18:4 and Genesis 2:7 ready, since those are where the conversation usually turns next.
