# Jesus Is Not Michael the Archangel

*Hebrews 1:5 / Jude 9*

## Doorstep Question

> "Hebrews 1:5 asks 'to which of the ANGELS did God ever say, "You are my Son"?' If Jesus is Michael the Archangel, why does this passage specifically exclude all angels from being called God's Son?"

## JW Claim

Jesus is Michael the Archangel — the highest created being. Before
coming to earth he was Michael; he became Jesus during his earthly
life; and he returned to being Michael after his resurrection.

## Strategy

Hebrews 1:5 is the knockout verse. The entire chapter contrasts Jesus with angels — Jesus is ABOVE every angel. The rhetorical question expects the answer "none" — no angel was ever called God's Son. If Jesus is Michael, then Hebrews 1 contradicts itself. Also, in Jude 9, Michael "did not presume to bring a slanderous charge" against the devil but said "The Lord rebuke you." Michael defers to the Lord's authority. Jesus, by contrast, commands demons directly with his own authority (Mark 1:25). Michael appeals to higher authority; Jesus IS the higher authority.

## Key Insight

Hebrews 1 specifically excludes angels from the Son's identity. If Jesus is an archangel, the entire argument of Hebrews 1 collapses.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "1 Thessalonians 4:16 says Jesus descends 'with the voice of an archangel' — that means he IS the archangel."

**Counter:** It says he descends WITH the voice of an archangel and WITH the trumpet of God. By that logic, he's also "the trumpet of God." The preposition "with" indicates accompaniment, not identity. A king may arrive with a herald's announcement — that doesn't make the king the herald.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Michael is described as a great prince who protects God's people (Daniel 12:1) — that sounds like Jesus."

**Counter:** Similarities in role don't prove identity. Moses was also a deliverer of God's people, but that doesn't make Moses Jesus. The question is what Hebrews 1 says: no angel — not even the greatest — shares the Son's identity.

## What to Avoid

Don't ridicule the Michael-Jesus identification. Acknowledge that the Watchtower teaches it and then let Hebrews 1:5 do the work.

## Homework

Read all of Hebrews 1 in your own Bible. Notice how many times it contrasts the Son with angels. Ask: could the Son be an angel if the whole chapter says he's above them?
