# Hell Is Real

*Jesus on Eternal Punishment*

**Strength:** Strong | **Tone:** Good | **Topic:** Eschatology

## Doorstep Question

> "Jesus warned about hell more than anyone else in the Bible. If you respect Jesus, why would you dismiss the thing he warned about most urgently?"

## JW Claim

Hell is not a place of torment — the Bible teaches that the dead are
"conscious of nothing at all" (Ecclesiastes 9:5). The Hebrew word Sheol
and the Greek word Hades simply mean "the grave." A loving God would never
torment people forever. Hellfire is a pagan doctrine that crept into
Christianity.

## Strategy

Don't start with theology — start with Jesus' own words. Quote Luke 12:4-5 and Mark 9:43-48 directly. The JW respects Jesus, so let Jesus speak. The key move is showing that Jesus himself taught conscious, ongoing punishment — not annihilation. Then ask: "If Jesus warned about this so urgently, wouldn't a loving God make sure we knew it was real?" The NWT renders Matthew 25:46 as "everlasting cutting-off" rather than "eternal punishment" — but the same Greek word aionios is used for both the punishment and the life. If the life is eternal, so is the punishment.

## Key Insight

Jesus spoke about hell more than heaven. If the Watchtower is right that hell doesn't exist, then Jesus was either lying or confused — neither option works if you believe he's God's appointed King.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Gehenna was just the rubbish dump outside Jerusalem — Jesus was using a metaphor."

**Counter:** Even if Gehenna refers to the Valley of Hinnom, Jesus describes it as a place "where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched" (Mark 9:48). A rubbish dump fire goes out — Jesus' fire doesn't. And in Matthew 25:46 he directly contrasts "eternal punishment" with "eternal life" — same Greek word (aionios) for both. If the life is eternal, so is the punishment.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Ecclesiastes 9:5 says the dead are conscious of nothing."

**Counter:** Ecclesiastes is written from the perspective of life "under the sun" — what things look like from a human viewpoint (Ecclesiastes 1:3). Solomon is describing how death appears, not revealing what happens after death. Jesus, who came from heaven, reveals what actually happens — and he says "fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna" (Matthew 10:28).

### Response 3

**JW says:** "A loving God would never torment people forever."

**Counter:** That's an emotional argument, not a biblical one. The Bible says God is both loving AND just. Romans 6:23 says "the wages of sin is death" — God takes sin seriously. The same love that sent Jesus to die is the love that warns us about the consequences of rejecting him. Would a loving doctor hide a cancer diagnosis because it's upsetting?

### Response 4

**JW says:** "The Lake of Fire in Revelation is symbolic — it means the second death, total destruction."

**Counter:** Revelation 20:10 says those in the Lake of Fire "will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Revelation 14:11 says "the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever, and they have no rest day or night." That language of ongoing, conscious torment cannot mean annihilation. And Revelation 20:14 says death itself is thrown into the Lake of Fire — death can't be annihilated, so the Lake of Fire means more than destruction.

## What to Avoid

Do not use hell as a weapon or threat. Present it as Jesus' own urgent warning motivated by love. Don't get drawn into debating every occurrence of Sheol/Hades — keep the focus on Jesus' words in the Gospels.

## Homework

Read Luke 12:4–5, Mark 9:43–48 and Matthew 25:46, with the judgment scene that leads up to it, until you can retell Jesus' warnings in his own words, because the aim is to let Jesus speak. Check the NWT's 'everlasting cutting-off' in Matthew 25:46 for yourself, and note that the same Greek word, aionios, describes both the punishment and the life. Practise the doorstep question aloud in a tone of loving concern, never as a threat. Expect Ecclesiastes 9:5; read Ecclesiastes 1:3 beforehand so you can explain the 'under the sun' viewpoint briefly, then return to Matthew 10:28 rather than debating every occurrence of Sheol and Hades.
