# Eternal Salvation to All Who Obey Him

*Hebrews 5:9 and the obedience of faith*

## Doorstep Question

> "When Hebrews 5:9 says Christ is 'the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,' what kind of obedience do you think is being described — the initial obedience of believing the gospel, or a lifetime of meeting attendance and field service?"

## JW Claim

Hebrews 5:9 proves salvation requires ongoing obedience. Christ 'became
the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him' — not to all who
merely believe. Salvation is conditional on a life of submission to
Jehovah's commands through his organisation.

## Strategy

The answer is in Paul's own vocabulary. Paul opens Romans by naming the goal of his apostleship: 'to bring about the obedience of faith' (Romans 1:5). He closes Romans with the same phrase (Romans 16:26). In Romans 10:16 Paul equates unbelief with disobedience: 'they have not all obeyed the gospel.' 'Obedience' in the New Testament is first and foremost the obedience OF faith — the act of surrendering to the gospel. Hebrews 5:9 is using the same vocabulary. Christ is the source of eternal salvation to all who respond to the gospel in trusting surrender — which is exactly the same people Paul calls 'those who believe' in Romans 1:16.

## Key Insight

In the New Testament, 'obey the gospel' and 'believe the gospel' are the same act. Hebrews 5:9 is not an alternative to faith — it is New Testament shorthand for believing faith.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "But the verse says 'obey' — not 'believe.' Those are different things."

**Counter:** They are different English words but often the same New Testament act. Romans 10:16 makes this explicit: 'they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?' Paul uses 'obey' and 'believe' as synonyms in the same sentence. Romans 1:5 calls the goal of Paul's apostleship 'the obedience of faith' — hupakoē pisteōs — a single phrase in which faith IS the kind of obedience meant. Hebrews itself illustrates this in chapter 11: Abraham 'obeyed' by going out to a land he did not know (11:8), and it is faith that is credited (11:8 again). The two are fused. 'Obey' in Hebrews 5:9 is not a contrast to faith; it is a description of faith.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "But surely the obedience in Hebrews 5:9 includes a whole lifetime of keeping God's commands?"

**Counter:** Faith does produce obedience — that is exactly what James 2 says, and what Ephesians 2:10 says. The question is what Hebrews 5:9 is identifying as the SOURCE of salvation. Read verse 9 alongside Hebrews 10:14: 'by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.' One offering. Perfected. For all time. That is the ground. Hebrews 10:22 tells us how we receive it: 'let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.' Faith receives; sanctification follows. Hebrews never puts obedience forward as the ground of perfection. Christ's single offering is the ground, and faith is how we appropriate it.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "If salvation is just by faith, why does Hebrews 5:9 not just say 'all who believe'?"

**Counter:** Because Hebrews is written to a Jewish-Christian audience tempted to drift BACK into ceremonial law-keeping (Hebrews 6:1-6, 10:26-31). The author uses 'obedience' language because his readers understood obedience as the posture of the covenant community. He is telling them that the true obedience is staying with the gospel of the new and better priesthood — NOT going back to old religious systems. Hebrews 10:39 makes it explicit: 'we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have FAITH and preserve their souls.' The opposite of 'obeying' Christ in Hebrews is 'shrinking back into religion' — and the cure for shrinking back is faith. Read Hebrews 10:38: 'my righteous one shall live by faith.' Faith is the righteous life. Obedience is the form it takes. The two cannot be pried apart, but they also cannot be inverted: obedience does not cause the perfection — Christ's single offering does.

### Response 4

**JW says:** "So you are saying we don't have to obey?"

**Counter:** Absolutely not. Saving faith is obedient by nature — it obeys the command to repent and believe (Acts 17:30), it obeys Christ as Lord (Luke 6:46), it obeys the household commands of Scripture. Ephesians 2:10 says we are 'created in Christ Jesus for good works.' But the FOR is crucial: obedience is the FRUIT of salvation, not the ROOT of it. The difference between the Reformed position and the Watchtower position is not whether obedience matters — both say it does. The difference is whether obedience is the REASON for our standing before God or whether it FLOWS FROM a standing Christ has already secured. Hebrews 10:14 answers: 'he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.' Perfected — past tense, finished. Being sanctified — present tense, ongoing. Standing is settled; growth continues.

## What to Avoid

Do not concede that Hebrews 5:9 teaches works-based salvation and then try to minimise it. Engage it directly with the New Testament's own 'obedience of faith' vocabulary. Most JWs have never noticed Romans 1:5.

## Homework

Read Romans 1:5, Romans 10:16, and Romans 16:26 alongside Hebrews 5:9. Notice how Paul uses 'obey' and 'believe' interchangeably in reference to the gospel.
