# Heaven Is the Presence of God

*Not a Gated Destination for 144,000 — Wherever God Is, Heaven Is*

## Doorstep Question

> "When the Bible talks about heaven, is it talking about a physical place that 144,000 people will go to — or is it talking about being in the presence of God? If heaven is the presence of God, and Jesus promised to be with us always (Matthew 28:20), doesn't every believer already have a heavenly hope?"

## JW Claim

The Watchtower teaches that heaven is a literal, gated, limited
destination reserved for 144,000 anointed Christians. Everyone else — the
"great crowd" of earthly-hope Witnesses — will live forever on a restored
paradise earth. This creates two tiers of Christians, and makes heaven a
real-estate problem (space is limited, so the door is closed to the rest).

## Strategy

Ask the JW to define heaven. They'll typically point to physical features — streets of gold, tree of life, a spatial location. Walk through Revelation 21:3 together — "the dwelling place of God is with man, and he will dwell with them" — the central image is God dwelling with his people, not relocating to an architectural wonder. Then Revelation 22:3-4 — "they will see his face." That's what heaven IS. Then note 2 Corinthians 5:8 ("absent from the body, at home with the Lord") and Philippians 1:23 ("to depart and be with Christ") — Paul's heaven is Christ's presence, not coordinates. Conclude: if heaven is the presence of God, and God is present with every born-again believer by his Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14), then every believer already has the down-payment of the heavenly hope. There's one hope, not two (Ephesians 4:4).

## Key Insight

The JW heaven/earth divide treats heaven like a city with a limited housing supply. Scripture treats heaven as a Person — God himself, present with his people. You can't limit access to Christ's presence to 144,000, because "where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them" (Matthew 18:20). Heaven starts now, wherever Christ is known, and consummates in the new heavens and new earth when God dwells with us fully and visibly.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Revelation 7:9 shows a great crowd 'standing before the throne' — that's on earth, not in heaven."

**Counter:** Before the throne IS heaven — that's where the throne is (Revelation 4:2, 5:11). Every time Revelation uses "standing before the throne" it's describing the heavenly throne-room scene (Revelation 5:11, 7:9, 7:15, 14:3). The great crowd is IN heaven worshipping, not on a restored earth looking up. Revelation 7:15 even says "he who sits on the throne will SHELTER THEM with his presence" — which is the whole point: God's presence is the dwelling.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "But Psalm 37:29 says the righteous will inherit the earth forever."

**Counter:** Yes — and Revelation 21:1-3 is how that's fulfilled. The new Jerusalem comes DOWN from heaven to earth, and God dwells with man. Heaven and earth are united, not separated into tiers. Every believer inherits that restored earth AND dwells in God's presence — it's one hope, not two (Ephesians 4:4). The JW system splits what Scripture joins.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "Jesus said 'in my Father's house are many rooms' — he's preparing specific places for specific people."

**Counter:** The Father's house isn't a hotel with a limited room-count — it's the temple image (John 2:16, "my Father's house"), the place of God's dwelling. Jesus' point in John 14:2-3 is "I am going to prepare a place for you... I will come again and take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." The prepared place is being WHERE HE IS. That promise is for every disciple he's speaking to — and through them, for every believer — not for 144,000 out of billions.

## What to Avoid

Don't get bogged down in the mechanics of the new heavens and new earth. Keep it simple: heaven = God's presence. Your aim is to dissolve the two-tier geography, not to litigate eschatology.

## Homework

Read Revelation 21:1-4 and 22:1-5 until you can say from memory what the central promise is: God dwelling with his people, and his people seeing his face. Then read Revelation 4-5 and 7:9-17 so you know where the throne is whenever "before the throne" appears. Memorise 2 Corinthians 5:8, Philippians 1:23 and Ephesians 4:4. Check on jw.org how the organisation explains the great crowd "standing before the throne" in Revelation 7:9. Practise the doorstep question aloud as a simple invitation to define heaven. Prepare for "Psalm 37:29 says the righteous will inherit the earth": agree, then show how Revelation 21:1-3 brings heaven and earth together rather than dividing believers into two hopes.
