# Born of God Cannot Go On Sinning

*1 John 3:9 — a promise only available to all believers*

## Doorstep Question

> "1 John 3:9 says 'No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him.' And 1 John 5:1 says 'everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God.' If everyone who believes is born of God, and everyone born of God has God's seed that breaks sin's habit — who does that include?"

## JW Claim

The Watchtower teaches that being "born of God" or "born again" applies only to the 144,000 anointed Christians with a heavenly calling. The "other sheep" believe in Jesus and obey the organisation, but they are not described as "born of God" in JW theology. This means the power to break the habit of sin — which 1 John 3:9 ties directly to being born of God — is not available to the other sheep.

## Strategy

This argument creates a dilemma for JW theology by linking three texts: 1. 1 John 3:9 — the one born of God does not go on sinning (God's seed abides) 2. 1 John 5:1 — everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God 3. The Watchtower teaches most JWs are NOT born of God
The dilemma: if 1 John 5:1 is true universally (everyone who believes is born of God), then the other sheep ARE born of God, and the two-tier system collapses. But if the other sheep are NOT born of God, then by 1 John 3:9 they have no access to the seed that breaks sin's pattern.
1. Read 1 John 5:1 together: "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God."
2. Ask: "Does your organisation teach that you believe Jesus is the Christ?" (They will say yes.)
3. "So 1 John 5:1 says you have been born of God. Do you agree with that?" (This is uncomfortable — the JW may hesitate.)
4. "Now read 1 John 3:9. The person born of God has God's seed abiding in them — and that's why they don't practice sin. Is that your experience?"

## Key Insight

The two-tier JW system creates an impossible situation with 1 John: either the other sheep are born of God (which 1 John 5:1 clearly says all believers are), or they have no access to the seed that John says defeats sin's habit. There is no third option in John's text.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "1 John 5:1 refers to the anointed in the first century."

**Counter:** John uses present tense universals throughout his letter — "everyone who loves is born of God" (1 John 4:7), "everyone who believes" (5:1), "everyone who overcomes" (5:4). He's not writing about a historical class — he's establishing theological principles. The same letter ends: "I write these things to you who believe... so that you may know that you have eternal life" (5:13). Who is the "you"? Everyone the letter is written to.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "We do have the Spirit's influence — just not the indwelling."

**Counter:** 1 John 3:9 says "God's seed abides in him." That's indwelling language — not influence from a distance. The word "abides" (menō) is used throughout John's writings for the Spirit's indwelling presence (John 14:17 — "he lives with you and will be in you"). If God's seed doesn't abide in the other sheep, John's mechanism for not practising sin isn't available to them.

## What to Avoid

This argument can feel like an intellectual trap to a JW. Lead with curiosity, not cleverness. "I've been reading 1 John and I'm trying to understand how these verses fit together — can you help me?" is a better opener than presenting it as a gotcha.

## Homework

Read 1 John 3:9 with the verses around it, and 1 John 5:1–5, until you can quote both key verses from memory and explain how they connect, then read 1 John 4:7 and 5:13. Check the NWT wording of 1 John 3:9 and 5:1 before you quote them. Practise the curious opener aloud, 'I've been reading 1 John and I'm trying to understand how these verses fit together; can you help me?', until it sounds like a genuine enquiry rather than a trap. Expect '1 John 5:1 refers to the anointed of the first century'; rehearse the run of present-tense 'everyone who' statements across the letter, and the question of who the 'you' in 5:13 is.
