# The Last Adam — More Than a Man

*1 Corinthians 15:45-49*

## Doorstep Question

> "Paul calls Jesus 'the last Adam' and says he is a 'life-giving spirit.' But Adam could only give life to his own descendants. Jesus gives life to all who believe. What kind of being has the authority to give life to the dead?"

## JW Claim

Jesus is 'the last Adam' — a perfect human being who corresponds to the
first Adam. Just as Adam was a man, Jesus is a man. He is not God but
a perfect human replacement for Adam, restoring what Adam lost. His
role is to undo the damage of the fall as a man, not as God.

## Strategy

The JW reads 'last Adam' as proof Jesus is merely human. But Paul's point is the opposite — Jesus far surpasses Adam:
(1) Read 1 Corinthians 15:45 — 'The first man Adam became a living soul. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.' The contrast is functional, not about substance: Adam received life (psuche); Jesus gives life (pneuma). 'Life-giving' is the key word — the Bible consistently identifies giving life as Yahweh's unique prerogative (Deuteronomy 32:39, 1 Samuel 2:6).
(2) Read verse 47 — 'The first man is from the earth, made of dust; the second man is from heaven.' Adam is earthy; Jesus is heavenly in origin. This is not a statement about becoming an angel — it's about Jesus' pre-existence and heavenly nature.
(3) The contrast is not 'man vs man' but 'natural vs spiritual,' 'earthy vs heavenly,' 'receiving life vs giving life.' Each contrast elevates Jesus above the merely human category.
(4) Ask: If Jesus is just a perfect man replacing Adam, why does Paul say he is 'a life-giving spirit'? Adam was never called that. The Bible consistently identifies the power to give life as a unique prerogative of Yahweh (Deuteronomy 32:39). Yet John 5:21 says 'the Son also gives life to whomever he wishes' — placing Jesus on the same level as the Father.

## Key Insight

'Last Adam' doesn't reduce Jesus to a man — it elevates him above Adam. The first Adam received life; the last Adam gives life. Only God has the authority to give life to the dead. The very title the JW uses to make Jesus merely human actually demonstrates his deity.

## JW Responses & Counters

### Response 1

**JW says:** "Jesus is the corresponding ransom — he must be equal to Adam, a perfect man, to balance the scales."

**Counter:** The ransom requires Jesus to be truly human, yes — and Trinitarians agree he took on genuine human nature (Philippians 2:7). But 'last Adam' doesn't mean 'only a man.' The ransom's sufficiency depends on who he is — a merely human sacrifice could atone for one person at best. Only an infinite person can provide an infinite ransom. That's why 1 Timothy 2:6 calls it a 'corresponding ransom for all' — the scope of 'all' requires a divine person.

### Response 2

**JW says:** "Life-giving spirit means Jesus was resurrected as a spirit creature, not that he is God."

**Counter:** 'Life-giving spirit' contrasts with 'living soul.' The point isn't about Jesus' substance but his function — he gives life, whereas Adam only received it. And John 5:21 is explicit: 'Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whomever he wishes.' Giving life to whomever you wish is a divine prerogative, not an angelic one.

### Response 3

**JW says:** "The second man is from heaven — this just means God sent Jesus from heaven."

**Counter:** 'From heaven' (ex ouranou) describes origin, not just mission. Compare John 3:13 — 'No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.' And John 6:38 — 'I have come down from heaven.' Jesus' heavenly origin distinguishes him from Adam's earthy origin in a way that goes beyond 'God sent a perfect man.'

## What to Avoid

Don't deny Jesus' genuine humanity — the 'last Adam' title does affirm he is truly human. The Trinitarian position is that Jesus is both fully God and fully man. Avoid making it sound like Jesus' humanity is unimportant — it's essential for the atonement.

## Homework

Read 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 until you can explain its contrasts from memory: living soul and life-giving spirit, earthy and heavenly, first man and second man. Then read Deuteronomy 32:39, 1 Samuel 2:6 and John 5:21 together, so the thread from "Yahweh gives life" to "the Son also gives life to whomever he wishes" is in your head without notes. Read verses 45 and 47 in the NWT on jw.org as well. Practise the doorstep question aloud. Rehearse the corresponding-ransom reply with Philippians 2:7 and 1 Timothy 2:6, and settle beforehand that you will affirm Jesus' true humanity gladly rather than seem to downplay it.
